COMAND or Battery Problem?
I posted the following in the Audio & Electronics forum, but no replies so far. Hoping for better luck here.
Lately when starting up my '06 SL500, the COMAND does not power up and the words "please wait" appear in the right multifunction display window. After 3-5 minutes, the display changes to "----", and I can see the COMAND screen changing appearance as if it were booting up. After another 3-4 minutes, the right display changes to "off" and the COMAND is now ready for use. I had the the consumer battery tested and the report was all OK. After engine start, the total inop time period for the COMAND varies from a high of around 8 minutes to a low of 5 seconds to fully power up; more often it's around 3-5 minutes, but the sequence of messages in the display window is always the same whenever starting up my SL. What do these symptoms tell you? Thanks

I used to have similar failures of the system to boot up on my 05 SL and 06 S. The navigation update discs apparently also contain software updates. When I replaced the Nav discs with the later release the problems were eliminated. I have not had a recurrence in almost three years.
An electrical system failure can cause a complete command system failure. This happened to me last year on the 05 SL. The dealer just had to reinstall the system software to fix it. If this happened it would be obvious, the entire system was inoperable.

COMMAND STUCK ON LOOKING FOR DVD 1
I tried to update Command Nav with latest update. System was interrupted while loading DVD1. Now it is stuck asking me to load DVD1. Went into engineering menu and tried to reset the system to no avail. I disconnected the battery and still no reset. I would appreciate any help anyone could provide so I do not have to deal with the dealer... I have a 2012 GLK (Pre face lift).

It sounds like you have a two disc update set for a hard drive based system. When I purchased the version 10.0 two disc update set for my 2009 SL I had the same failure you describe. Also tried the reset process. I gave up and took it to the dealer. The outcome was a firmware update was required for the COMAND system. Dealer told me it took them about four hours to finish first the firmware update with the STAR system, then the Nav update with the two discs. No charge, covered by warranty.
