Interior Color Dilemma

I am in the process of ordering for February delivery. I had wanted to choose Teal Blue leather with the Burl Walnut trim to go with the Aegean Blue exterior. However, MBUSA "mandate" Black Ash wood with the Teal Blue. I personally find this ridiculous as (a) Teal Blue with Burl Walnut is standard in other countries (I have seen it) and (b) the "build-your-own" website only excludes Chestnut with Teal Blue. But there we are, MBUSA failing again to satisfy its customers (even those willing to pay $1150 for an optional leather interior!).

So, what should I do? Accept the mandate or go with Charcoal to get the Burl Walnut (I do not want the lighter Stone interior)? I have not seen Black Ash but it would seem to offer little (if any) contrast with Teal Blue. I would appreciate advice/opinios from you experts. I cannot decide what to do. It is hard to justify taking a second choice when paying more than $90K for a car

so are you saying you cant get teal/ burl even when you pay for a special config? i would think it is possible. are you basing this on the "build your own" or have you talked to the dealer about it?

personaly i would choose either stone or charcoal interior to go with Agean. with the chestnut wood... but thats me.

Take my word for it WannaBeAMG, the computer will not accept an order for Teal Blue unless it is with Black Ash. At least, that is what my dealer assures me and he has taken it up with MBUSA on my behalf. Thanks for sharing your color choice.

I don't think it looks good, especially if you're thinking it will tone with the exterior colour. I think it's better to go for a marked contrast instead of a match which doesn't quite make it. Berry Red with red exterior doesn't work, and silver with alpaca/ash looks bland. About the only combination which works like that is black on black. I'd steer well clear of the blue interior if I were you.

I agree with you about contrast, Blue SL, which is why I do not like the idea of dark clolor leather with Black Ash. However, I have seen Teal Blue interior with Aegean Blue exterior and it looks terrific. It is just frustrating that MBUSA mandates only Black Ash wood trim with Teal Blue.

I have asked the dealer to change to Charcoal leather and Burl Walnut. Boring but it seems that is what MBUSA wants for us all.

those are from renntech thats why it has carbon fiber trim. but the teal interior comes with black wood so that gives you a pretty good idea of what it looks like.

Great pics. Thanks. Confirms me in my view that I want Burl Walnut. If I have to Charcoal with that, so be it (but I really prefer Teal Blue). I am currently living in Hong Kong, moving back to the US in time to pick up my baby in February, and the local dealer in HK has that combination (Teal Blue + Burl Walnut) in the showroom. If it wasn't right hand drive, I'd take it!

then it seams it can be done. i say to hell with your local sales rep, talk to the general manger and see about getting it. it will probably come down to how much youre willing to spend. the computer may not accept it when he tries to enter it (as it isnt one of the set combinations) but i was under the impression that custom applications are always available for a price. its not like they dont have both those materials. they just arent usually paired together. im sure it can be done

Appreciate the thought WannaBeAMG. However, it is not as easy as that. The dealer has been very supportive including raising the matter to a higher level within MBUSA but........stone wall. They apparently don't care about customer satisfaction and don't care about the money (I have changed to Charcoal so will save the $1150 upgrade charge). All they care about is forcing the customer to take the choices they have pre-determined for the US even if those options are generally available overseas. We stupid 50 year old, 3 SL owners simply cannot be trusted to make rational decisions!

Have a great Thanksgiving everyone.

Hey 3SL...

probably too late to consider this..but why not order the Teal Blue with the Ash Wood...then order a Burl Walnut wood kit from MB and have the deal switch it out?? Sure you pay the cost, but you'd have paid an upcharge to get it with the Burl Walnut to start with...

just an idea.

BTW...awaiting my 2004 SL500 in Feb too. Black with Charcoal.

SL Interior Choices - Thousands

Hm... now it's Feb. Have you got your new baby? With extra $, you may get the interior customized to ANY combination you want. $90K for SL, you are sure the VIP already and deserve to choose your own interior design to distinguish from the other SL owners.

HK, too expensive when there is a rediculous high tax on Euro cars. U.S. is sure the heaven for Euro vehicle lovers.

thanks for the offer Canauto....but without trying to **** people off or cause any flare-ups...I have to say I won't be changing a thing on this car.

I am a purist when it comes to these things. I chose the car because of it's appearance so I'm not sure why I'd want to change it. I also believe that if the car was meant to look anothe way, then the designers at MB would have designed it that way.

But that's just me.

Smile I Agree

I absolutely agree with your comments.

I am more into the car show business and I see a lot of different upgrades (maybe too many of them, even I am confused what beauty means). But I think if there is a nice stock SL sitting in the middle of the show room w/ top down, it will definitely catch a lot of people's eyes.

Since I've been contributing (my word, you may or may not agree) to this forum, I've been struck how there are pockets of the US where the SL is a common sight and owners feel the need to differentiate their car from those of their neighbours by adding goodness-knows-what to it leaving something which may look good, but probably will not.

Fortunately, I live in a rural part of the UK where if it can't carry bales of hay, it's not really a car, so SLs are few and far between which saves me all kinds of decision-making angst and a pile of money...

Sure wish I could hitch up my muck-spreader to it though...
