The command unit on my 2003 SL55 AMG R230 is hazy. I am told that the coating on the glass plate on the LCD panel has withered. I have searched the forums and have not been able to find a solution. Could someone please let me know how to clean this?

also the plastic buttons on the front panel look dirty and faded. How can i bring them back to life again such that they shine and look new. I am sure there are polishes that do this trick.

Wow--that is more than just hazy ! It looks like it is crazed. I doubt polishing will fix that but a product like "wipe new" may have a chance. Various versions of this stuff are available at Walmart if you are in the US. It is also used on badly faded headlights or black oxidised palstic

 

wipe new is not available in India. I have got my hands on Novus solution No1, 2 & 3. Is it safe to apply that on onld and faded plastic parts and the screen?

 

Novus does not work. Neither does acetone nor does white vinegar. Any help is appreciated. Pls help. Thanks.

I'm guessing that your screen is ruined ... crazing such as that can't be buffed out or polished away. I don't know what happened to it, but ... it's toast ... its plasticity has been destroyed.

 

i used a nail polish remover that is acetone based. no effect. is it possible to repair just the screen? or do i have to replace the whole unit itself? the unit works just fine. it is the screen that is bad. any more ideas as to how to clean this up?

 

Acetone usually causes the type of damage in the picture. You may be able to save if you sand the screen. First, try a large pencil type eraser. If that does not work, jump up to 2000 grit sand paper but make sure it is slightly wet to give it some lubrication. If the 2000 grit is not enough, step down to 1500 grit. Once you get all the crazing out, you may be able to polish it up with some Novus. The screen is most likely ruined though.

 

i think you misunderstood me. i used acetone to remove the hazyness. also all the other stuff including novus to repair it. no effect at all. what caused the screen to go hazy is not clear to me. maybe too much moisture in mumbai air and also that the car is now 13 years old can cause this damage.

 

I just bought a used SL65 (5 model) and t had been badly valeted by at least one inconsiderate cleaner. The coating was scratched and misty, like a thin coating of candle wax, but the advice on this site encouraged me [to ask my wife] to try the Novus 1 and Novus 2 to clean off the remaining coating.
It took 10 minutes (my wife is a perfectionist - it could have been done in 3).

You lose the coating.
You gain a clear screen.

 

My COMAND screen looked like it had what was once a purple-tinted anti-glare coating that was all scratched. I used a microfiber cleaning cloth and some Pledge surface cleaner. It took the coating off, but left a nice clean screen behind. I am sure I have more glare now, but at least no scratches. And I could always buy a stick-on anti-glare screen protector.
