Unhappy Strange noise from the back!!

I have a 04 sl500 with 3000 miles. There has always been a strange noise whenever the car passes less smooth roads. It sounds very much like the inner lid is bumping and shaking around in the trunk, but it also sounds like from somewhere between the seats and the trunk, I'm not sure. Is this common? Anyone has the same problem? Please help!

Yep, I have similar noises from the rear area when I go over bumps, expansion strips, etc. Sometimes it seems to be fine, other times it is really loud, like a 15-year old Yugo might sound. Very frustrating.

I have not been able to isolate it. Have tried raising/lowering the windos, opening/closing the trunk lid.

have you brought it in and have they checked it yet? if so, what did they say about what's causing it?

The fuel tank (if I'm not mistaken) is behind the driver seat. Could it be that what you're hearing is fuel splashing around in the tank? If that's the case I would think you would hear it more when you have less gas in the tank.

I'll try to listen for that on my 04 SL 500 and let you know. I remember hearing something on a couple of occasions but it sounded to me like fuel in the tank splashing around, so I ignored it. I will pay closer attention in the next few days.

Fuel i the tank is a reasonable guess, I'll take a listen and see if that would explain it. I did take the car in, the dealer adjusted the vario roof and replaced the sun visors (which used to flap against the headliner quite loudly - that made a big difference). Much better now, but still doesn't sound as "tight" as a sedan would, although I suspect that's inherent in having a non-fixed roof.

The noise is clearly coming from the left side of the car towards the upper back, so I don't think it's the fuel tank. And the noise I get sounds like some sort of metal and rather big piece viberating back to its balance position after the car gets bumped. The noise seems also to be more apparent when diving local. Any solution guys?

Some people have had their roof re-welded in some spots, which may now have been corrected at the factory. Try and do a forum search and try to get your dealer to find about any roof problems ot what to do to fix the roof. It seemed to fix the problem for other people, and from what you say, the noises could be coming from the roof.

I have exactly the same problem on my 01' SL500. My local MB dealer haven't succeeded isolating it. Any ideas what might be the problem?
