RENNTech SL500

About a year ago, my father bought a '03 SL500. After having it for a while, he's decided to , in his words, "make a significant performance addition". After attending the Houston Auto Show with him this past weekend, we ran by the RENNTech display and now he is seriously thinking about installing their low-boost supercharger kit.

Does anyone on here have any experience with RENNTech, or if even this kit itself? If so, what kind of performance gains (0-60, 1/4 mile) should he expect? He doesn't really understand the specifics of all the auto-lingo (I'm a sophomore ME major here at the University of Texas so i'ts kinda second nature to me), so he doesn't know exactly all the things the techs are telling him.

If anyone can shed some light on the subject for me, that would be great.

Renntech actually uses the supercharger found in the AMG models. I believe they lower the boost because the internals on the 500 are not as strong as the 55. In addition, the 500 has higher compression, which cannot be paired with a high boost supercharger.

Renntech makes good stuff. Performance will be slower than the SL55 however.

Look at Kleemann's supercharger. Cheaper but better performance.

The Kleemann s/c is about $11,00 plus installation. The figures are 5.00hp/473lb-ft

Go for the Kleemann. The performance is great and the price is even better now. You can't go wrong.

I just got my SL500 back from a Kleemann SC install and I love the power. I probably should have gotten the Sl55 to begin with, but this certainly does help.

Re: Re: Dernick

OK, he's going for RennTech's low boost s/cer kit, which should make around 450ish HP at the crank. There are a couple of reasons he went this route. First of all, RennTech takes up every part of the Mercedes warranty that is voided by installing the s/cer. Second, there is a dealer in Houston *Mercedes of Sugarland) inwhich the owner and other managers have RennTech modified cars, kinda making them put their feet in their mouths if they tried to deny service or warranty claims. Lastly, the guy that's going to do the install is Jurgen Steiner, one of Mercedes's 'master mechanics' and one of the main guys within RennTech.

It should be ready sometime late next week.

We waited about a week for the parts to come in because they were missing a clutch for the supercharger. Then when it was shipped, it ended up somewhere in Alabama. I'm going down the the place today because the parts should have been in on Saturday. The mechanic doing the install has guaranteed it'll be done by mid-week.

Here are some pics of the install. I took these Monday, but as of now everything is installed except the intercooler. It's going on the dyno tomorrow to be tuned and we should have it by Friday. I'll post more then.

I don't feel like uploading pics and all, so I'll just post a link to where I've posted them elsewhere...

We didn't get a chance to put it on the dyno because it took longer to finish the install than we thought, plus the fact that our mechanic when on a weeklong vacation with his family the day after we picked the car up. Not this weekend but the next one we are planning to put it on the dyno. Here's a video though of the mechanic and my dad 'attempting' to do a burnout in the garage. Too bad the traction control kicked in.

You might want to right-click and Save As because it's a pretty big file.

The car is running great. It is getting an ECU upgrade in a week or two, but other than that, I don't know much about the daily grind of it seeing as the car is in Houston and I'm in Austin right now.

When I'm hone this weekend, I'll try to get some pictures of it.

They should be working about 2-3 minutes after I post this. I needed the webspace that the pics were saved on for something else, but now I'll put the pics back up. Sorry.
