SL/R230: COMAND Screen Replacement
My 2005 SL500 screen recently started showing odd small, random botches of a few pixels in various places on the screen. I purchased a replacement screen and have removed the COMAND unit from the SL before.
Does anyone have any documentation on doing the COMAND surgery to replace the screen?
Thanks in advance -
David

PM me if interested.
PS. I want to sell the whole unit, not just the LCD panel, so please don't ask me to part it.

I finally got around to pulling my COMAND unit and taking it apart. Not a terribly difficult or complicated job to get the display out. Here are pictures, looking into figuring out the right part.
(2008 SL55)
I had some MAJOR scratches on my 2003 SL Command System screen after a "well meaning" detail shop '"cleaned" my screen!
The screen was so scratched that it was really not visibly use able. After trying to lightly clean/polish the screen .. I researched ALL the various options and upgrades from used command systems from other 03/04 R 230s .. since the 05 and newer are NOT interchangeable !
I read all the threads on this site and considered the large Chinese larger screen GPS reported replacements ..
Finally I realized the Command Screen internal display is projected onto a polarized surface film from a glass screen
I carefully scraped ALL the old FILM from the glass command screen and then ordered POLARIZED PFHC - AG/HC linear polarized film sheets from "A Flash"
Ste.108- 404, Shavano Park, Texas 78232 www.polarization.com for about $40 . The polarity works at a 45 degree angle to the projected image .. So measure the screen , take the peeled TOP polarized sheet and orient it to the desired angle and CAREFULLY cut it slightly larger than the viewed screen - (to slide under the edges).. BEFORE PEELING THE BOTTOM ADHESIVE. Then carefully work the new film onto your CLEAN OPAQUE screen .. and VOILA'
You can save a LOT of strife and keep your original system.
BTW this same fix should work on all later Command Screens since the have the same projection concept ..

Once the COMAND is out, the screen is actually the easiest part and fairly self explanatory. There are 4(?) screws that attach the faceplate/controls to the rest of the unit, and then a bunch of smaller screws to take off a couple of circuit boards.
they adjust height and width of the image on screen
