'07 SL550 just stopped, would not start

Just visited a friend and the car died right in front of the garage. Would not started again. Check front battery 12V+ 2 yrs old, trunk battery low 5.50 V. Replaced for the new one. There is no click or turn over. instrument light up, brake pump heard. I am planning to replace the starter tomorrow. Any advices please share.

Before throwing a starter at it, check to see if it is getting voltage. If so, then yes, it's the starter. If not, it may be the relay.

Towed the car back home today. The shifter was in "P" parking but the car kept rolling down the slope. The shifter moved freely but seems not engaging. What's going on? May be the "pawl" broken!! I don't think the transmission or gear box fall a part.

Maybe it's not the shifter itself but the linkage. That might make sense. Both the shifter and the transmission report their gears. If the disagree, the engine won't start. And since it rolled while in park and the shfiter seems loose, that would be a sign of a disconnected linkage. I"d check that before tearing into the shifter (though it's a major PITA to get to it from under the car).

Thank you for your advise. I feel a little bit better if the the bushing broken that is less stress to do.

Finally had the chance to go under the car and found the rod disconnected. Tried to put it back but almost impossible. Decided to remove the clip and connected the rod with an E-clip. Did not have the washer so I just pushed the clip on. It is running now will see how long does it last. Thanks again for your help.
