This is the picture of the little quitter that caused all the headaches, it costs around £120 from Mercedes. I have been driving the car all day yesterday, and the problem is solved !
The part is too rusted to get an part number, but I think it may be Valve - Mercedes-Benz (230-476-03-32-64). it is found near the petrol tank, and my Indie had to remove one exhaust back box, then the drive shaft, to get to it.

Brilliant thanks. I was close to selling the car but didn't want to do so and give this problem to someone else.

Can you list all the parts you changed that sorted the problen out. I know you mentioned one valve but can you also show me, name other parts.

Im not technical and just want to order them so don't know what to order.

Th Sensor isnt the Fuel pressure regulator ,its a seperate item ( number 20 on the Diagram above ) and shown in my 1st pic in line with the Reg . Its worth replacing as its such a pig of a job to get in there anyway you dont want to do this twice ! This is a better pic , yours wont look like this tho as ive modded the pipework on mine ..

Reviving this thread as I have a similar problem on my SL55. It started off with the car running rich and stumbling a bit at idle. This was traced to a flooded evap canister which allows fuel instead of vapor to be pulled in via the purge valve. Unplugging the purge valve made the issue go away. I replaced the canister with a used one and the problem was solved (I thought). Went to fill gas and it fills extremely slowly - maybe a minute or two to get a gallon in. Pulled the evap canister back out and drained off a cup or two of fuel. With the evap canister out, I get a slow drip of fuel from the fuel regulator vent line which I think means that I have a bad regulator.

Here is where the first major problem comes up: the fuel regulator P/N 230-476-03-32 is shown as discontinued as is 230-476-03-32-64 and no substitution is available. Has anyone else run into this and what was the solution? Pelican showed it as available, but I had them check and they also say no longer available.

I'm not sure how the system is supposed to operate. I'm thinking that the pump speed is controlled to control system pressure and the pressure regulator is just used as a kind of relief valve. Regular SL500's have a pressure regulating filter and no pump controller or pressure sensor. I'm debating between an aftermarket regulator or an SL500 style filter. DAS says system pressure should be about 4 bar, same as a base SL500, but I'm not sure that is correct. SL55 pump controllers are labeled 5 bar. Any fuel system experts out there?

My Parts as mentioned in my thread, where bought from Mercedes Birmingham, which had to order from Germany.
My suggestion would be to write an email to Mercedes Germany Head office, if you cannot get any joy from UK. Also may be worth trying other countries such as USA, Poland, etc..

I cannot see them stopping this part, without an replacement or upgraded part.

Please report on here if you get any joy.

Well, I talked to a local dealer who has one of the online parts stores. If you put in 230-476-03-32 in their online store it comes back as discontinued. If you enter 230-476-03-32-64 if says replaced by 230-476-03-32, which is discontinued. HOWEVER, I finally called and they tell me that there are 19 available in the US. They are about $200 with tax, but probably the best/easiest route to go. It is tempting to pull out everything and put in a good aftermarket pump and regulator, but that might create more problems than it solves.

After having the same problems with intermittent stalling and having checked everything, I just bought a new fuel pressure regulator and changed it!
Perfect, since I changed it I haven’t had any problems any more. It was very tricky to do the job. I had to remove the left muffler, no problem at all. I couldn’t take the drive shaft out, so I managed to change the regulator with the driveshaft in place, very, very difficult because you don’t have space non even to have a look at the regulator. People with small hands have a clear advantage.
i want to thank people that post these topics because it makes everything so much easier and by the way, saves you lots of $$$$!
Thank you so much, Ingo

Finally getting around to mine. Several other things to do, so I opted to drop the rear subframe. It does make getting to the regulator a tad easier.

Intermittent stalling

I wanted to drop the subframe but I couldn’t loosen the drive shafts, mine have no bolts!

Mine has the bolted axles, but I dropped the entire subframe instead of pulling the axle. I had to do axle seals, strut boots, and the regulator, so it seems liked less work overall to pull it down. Honestly, I don't know how people replace that regulator with everything in place.

I ended up twisting off one of the ABC bleeders and couldn't get the quick coupler on that side to even rotate. That was probably good because it would be stupid to leave 20 year old strut lines in when it is a 10 min. job to replace them at this point. I pulled the rear valve block to bleed the strut line (since the bleeder was frozen), so I will also rebuild the valve block, replace the rear accumulator, and at least put in the rear pressure line and the high pressure feed line from the pulsation dampener. I'm also ordering new fuel lines and, of course, replacing the fuel filter. All of that appears original too, filter included. I will end up spending close to $1k in parts, but this would probably be an $8k dealer job.

I swear that everything under the car is in pristine condition EXCEPT the parts that you need to remove. Not a hint of rust on the underbody, but bleeder screws and couplers are rusted, strut bolts were rusted, fuel regulator is rusted badly. They were about 90% of the way there on corrosion protection, but missed on the stuff that matters.

A lot of work, but this is the reality of facing up to doing something that has to be done, in the most logical and thorough way possible, so it doesn't have to be done again in short order.

I am getting ready to pull the rear subframe soon. Here's my checklist:

Replace rear ABC pressure lines
Replace rear ABC strut lines
Replace fuel filter
Replace fuel pressure regulator
Replace rear strut boots if necessary
Replace rear axle seals if necessary
Replace rear suspension bushings if necessary.

Did I miss anything important that should be changed 'while I'm down there?'

Thanks

I'm replacing the fuel lines, at least the pressure ones. They are 20 years old and a pain to get to. Check the flex disks and carrier bearing since you will have the driveshaft off.

I think your SL500 has a pressure regulating filter, not a separate pressure regulator.

Having trouble finding this stupid little valve (230-476-03-32-64). Seems to once again be out of stock and discontinued everywhere. Anyone have a good idea where to get one? Seems like they just all sold out again everywhere. Frustrating Mercedes just abandons its products and pretty much says tough luck. Sorry your $185k SL65 is now a paperweight.

Call a dealer, they have been available even though online sites show it as discontinued. I think someone incorrectly put 230-476-03-32 as the replacement for 230-476-03-32-64 instead of the other way around. The 230-476-03-32 part has been discontinued but 230-476-03-32-64 is available, or at least it was recently.
