Recall for E-Class W211 and SL R230 because of SBC problems

Hello,

it was all over the German news this morning: Mercedes is recalling all E-Class W211 models as of March 2002 production and all SL R230 models as of October 2001 production because of potential SBC brake problems. I don not know exactly what the problem is they are looking for. About 680.000 cars worldwide are affected. It is most likely to be found on high mileage cars with frequent braking, such as taxis. Mercedes taxis in Germany have already been checked and about every 2 out of 1000 cars had the problem they are looking for.

Still, have a good day.

Mercedes recalling 680,000 vehicles

BERLIN — DaimlerChrysler AG's Mercedes-Benz unit said Tuesday that it is recalling some 680,000 E- and SL-class vehicles worldwide to examine potential problems with a brake control system.

Mercedes said it is asking owners of the vehicles to visit their local service centers for a precautionary check of the so-called Sensotronic Brake Control system.

The company said it was aware of a "very small number" of complaints, but that braking was assured by the system's other hydraulic function.

The recall applies to E-class Limousines built after March 2002, T-model cars built after March 2003 and SL-class vehicles made after October 2001, Mercedes said.

This must be a potential safety issue instead of anything functional. Not a happy decision to have to make though.

SBC is of course my pet hate. It's a pointless application of technology and leads to a braking system with a completely artificial, spongy feel and, in the older versions at least, it's difficult to bring the car to a smooth stop. It would be better if the pedal resistance was linked to the pressure being applied in the braking system, not the distance the pedal has been pressed.

And it will be a maintenance headache. That silver control unit behind the right headlamp costs $3500 as a spare part. The stuff of nightmares. If you believe the press, SBC has been dropped from future cars, so it will only ever be in the Maybach, SLR, SL and E class. Good news for owners of future models, bad news for the rest of us because we're left with what Mercedes is now admitting is a dead-end technology.

Mine is booked in for Tuesday. Anyone had a letter yet? I haven't, but went ahead and rang the dealer anyway.

Its odd, in that I would have thought that one of the advantages of the technology might have been to bring down costs, not elevate them. Cost in this instance may include simplified manufacture/assembly as well as basic parts cost.

It's been documented that Bosch are making no money out of SBC. There's really heavy duty hydraulics there and those control units are heavily integrated for safety and technical reasons. It's a case of technology being applied to solve a problem which does not exist.
