Noise and Vibration (R231)

I have a 2014 SL 550 with the ABC suspension package and a day ago the car has developed and annoying noise and vibration. I was told that since I have ABC I should post my thread here. The noise sounds like a low growl, like bearing going bad. The noise cycles on and off...you hear it for 20 seconds or so every few minutes. Can also feel transference of vibration in the steering wheel. Not an AC problem because it occurs when AC is off. Could it be a pump, servo, transmission or ???

It doesn't sound like an ABC problem if it happens off and on. It could be the SBC (brake) pump . Have you tried applying the brake several times to see if that causes the noise to come on?

There doesn’t seem to be any correlation between application of the brakes and the occurrence of noise and vibration. The noise has occurred under acceleration, deceleration, light load, but is especially noticeable when entering a turn or when coming to a stop. It first started last week when we were having a very rainy day...thought at first it was the brakes drying themselves, but since the weather has cleared up, the problem has persisted.

Other potential problems suggested are ABC pulsation dampeners and Motor/transmission mounts.

Have you found what the problem was for this? I am experiencing the exact same problem on my car. Thanks.

almost certainly the ABC pulsation damper. You may notice the period cycling since the pump isn't always pumping at full pressure, ie controlled by the suction valve.

Thanks for the info. It seems in this case i would have to replace the ABC hydraulic pump to get this sorted out correct?

You dont need to replace the ABC pump to replace the damper ( it is a separate part ). Damper is around £180. + labour.

I had this exact issue (identical symptoms) in my 2013 SL63 and it was indeed a pulsation damper. Cost me $380 total, parts and labor, to have it replaced at an independent Mercedes specialist.

Since that time I have noticed the same noise many times, albeit certainly muted / softer. It seems to occur more when the car is hot.

that’s interesting you still notice a muted version the noise / vibration, so you still feel it through the steering wheel too ?

No I would say it’s now too low to be noticed as a vibration in the wheel, but you can hear a growling / buzzing that cycles on and off every few seconds, especially when hot. Possibly I’ve become too sensitive to what might be a “normal” sound for the ABC pump. Yesterday my daughter was riding with me and her opinion was “what sound?”

The ABC fluid looks fine in terms of level and color.
