600 SL new

Just got my 600sl last week. Im breaking it in , but have floored it a few times and the acceleration is insane. I have never experienced such a fast benz before. It peels out from a standing start with half throttle. Its the 1st car that the esp kicked on shifting from 1st to 2nd!!! It handles very well for heavy car and i love it. No body roll at all. It feels like an electric car since its so quiet.

It has some cowl shake over hard bumps. That was surprising as the last generation sl felt more solid . Im still happy.

I dont think it needs renntech chip as its fast enough. It has a hard time keeping traction as it is. I dont see the point of a chip.

it suffers from lazy shifting when using manual mode. its like 4 seconds a shift. takes away from some of the excitemant.

For me, as a user of Renntech's software, the benefit lies in fixing the slow shifting you mentioned as well as the mushy or non-linear (in my opinion) throttle response. Increased horsepower is a secondary benefit.

i would get the chip , however the 6400 price tag puts me off as way too high. i called renntech and tried to get just the shifting software and they said its a package only

My RENNtech chip upgrades are being shipped back to Carnutz in Belluvue today. My last 2 cars (01 Porsche 996 TT and 03 CL55) both felt fast when I got them, but after a while I wanted more power. I don't think you can have too much power, especially in the mid-range. It is interesting that last week the RENNtech web site listed the transmission upgrade as an option that could be purchased separately. I believe it was $1,740, but today it is no longer listed separately.

I did just order the Eisenmann exhaust for my SL600. The car just seems too quiet. (Eisenhaus.com if you want to check it out). I missed the "growl" of my CL55. $3,267.19 plus shipping. I will let you know how I like the new sound once I get it installed. The SLR exhaust system is by Eisenmann. They are about 2 weeks out on deliveries. That is about the time my car will arrive here from Bellevue.

mmm208,

I didn't get the new software until the break-in period was done at 1000 miles. The shifting and throttle response definitely felt better right after that.

mantylar,

Please do post how the exhaust works out. I miss the SL55 sound on acceleration but enjoy the relative silence of the 600 at cruising speed. I'm a little torn as to whether a sport exhaust is a good idea for this car.

Getting Better

Im convinced that the car is shifting much better as the miles pour on. I have 950 miles and its driving like it should now. Its interesting that a car gets better with age. Maybe the trasmission is breaking in or maybe the computer is learning.

Anyway I dont see the point with any performance chip. The car, as is has way too much power. Any more would be dangerous.
I have driven many cars such as gallardo and murcielago and to be quite honest the benz feels faster than both!!!

most new MB owners have found that driving it over time and accumulating miles, the car only gets better with MPG, shifting and acceleration. Since everything is new, guess it just takes some time for it to get broken in, but worth the wait

As you may be aware, exhaust from turbo cars is very quiet due to the routing of exhuast through the turbo chargers and not from restictive mufflers. The "55" cars are always going to have more grown than the "600" cars since they are supercharded and driven from the flywheel.

Having said that, I hope your Eisenmann exhaust does the trick.

Eisenmann exhausts sound REALLY good, just go to the eisenhaus.com theatre and listen to the SL55. If it sounds anything like that, you'r ein for a treat. I'm getting one for my CLK430. By the way, did u get the race version?

“Shank” previously posted his opinion of the Eisenmann exhaust after it was installed on his SL600. Eisenmann strongly recommends the Race Performance option vs the Sport Performance or High Performance options for the SL600. I should have my new Race Performance exhaust installed by June 5th and will post my comments right away. Here are Shank’s comments:

"Some time ago, someone posted a video clip of an sl500 with eisenmann exhaust. It sounded more aggressive than the 55. I then went ahead with the order of the SL600 with Eisenmann. I am the first 600 with eisenmann in the US Supposedly, but big deal. ANyway, with the V12TT, you can't rev it above 3k rpm in park or neutral, and the turbos silence the growl. It doesn't sound at all like the 500 posted. In fact, it sounds pretty close to stock. However, at WOT, you can hear the pleasant difference. I had someone drive my car and I followed, and at WOT, A loud growl comes on around 4 to 5K RPM, upward.

John at Eisenhaus in Bensenville, IL installed the exhaust, and required some minor cutting to have it fit exact. Again, This was the first one built. Great service from eisenhaus, and I recommend calling John if you're interested on one of these. The look of the car was what I was primarily after, but it does respond off the line a tad better. Nothing significant as far as increase in torque.....then again, I haven't had much room or time to test it."
