You need to buy the shorty 16mm wrench to access the top bolts to the motor mounts.
Pretty much impossible without the tool.

Do the tranny mount while you are at it.

I did not drop the exhaust. I did uncouple the steering shaft. To remove the top bolt on each mount I used a 16mm wrench with a flexible head.

Looks like this. Do an eBay search for Mercedes engine mount wrench and you will get a dozen or so hits. 16mm from memory.
When I did my mounts I had to use a bench grinder to take some of the thickness out of the spanner as it wouldn't fit over the bolt head because there wasn't enough gap between the bolt and the manifold (I think), this might just be a right hand drive or SL55 thing though.

More detailed posts are on the W211 subforum which has the same engine. However there appear to be 2 methods as described, unscrew the left exhaust downpipe and move it out of the way or unbolt the steering box from its bracket and move it out of the way. This is only for the left mount. The right one is easier.

Thanks for that..I don't have one in my arsenal so will online it and be prepared.
SL55 ...did you have to drop your exhaust or work around it.

Yes, I dropped exhaust, even then it was still a fight to get old mounts out and new ones in.

Many people succeeded in doing this with jacks and floor pumps (go to the W211 subforum). This was one of very few jobs that I took to the indy. I didn't want a 4000 lbs car on the lift while I am messing with it's balance by lifting a V8 off its mounts.
