The parking brake uses a drum system, integrated into the rear rotor. You adjust it by rotating the star wheel adjuster just like old style drum brakes. You access the star wheel through the lug bolt holes. It's similar to this:

Hi Rudeney,
Many thanks for quick reply. The lug bolt holes do not line up with the star wheel adjusters. It looks as though the parking brake drum needs to be removed to gain access to the adjusters. My SL is a 2002 R230 model.

You can reach the star adjuster through the lug bolt holes. You may need to pull the rotor off so you can better visualize what you are doing, but you must tighten them with the rotor/drum in place. Trust me - it does work that way.

If they have had the rear rotors off the rotors is secured with one screw and if the screw is on the correct place the star adjuster should line up
You might have to replace the brake shoes, If i first have the rear brake calipers and rotors off i suppose i would change the brake pads anyway if they are a bit worn.
The brake shoes for the park brake does not cost much

Thanks for the reply, the adjustment is not urgent (was a MOT advisory) next MOT not due until March 2019. Will do the work shortly.
