2005 SL55...load assist button will light up but doesn't work. Top functions perfectly and trunk is all the way up, no warning dings. Soft close works perfectly as well. Microswitch????

Hi, welcome to the forum! Please do one thing: Visit the User Control Panel and add your location (at least country) to your profile. This will greatly help other to give you more relevant information (though it does not matter in this case).

Load assist will not work until the trunk lid is fully raised, so make sure that it is. If so, then you may have a bad limit switch S124.

Had the exact same issue, reach behind the luggage separator latch and remove and put the connector back in fully seated, i did that and was able to close the assist lift. Mine was stuck open and I couldn't drive home with the trunk up like that so i did all i could and that fixed it for me. Good luck.
