2007 MB SL350 R230 in car stereo/sat nav upgrade
Hi Gents - I have a 2007 R230 SL350 and love the car so I am planning on holding onto it for years to come. That said, the in car stereo and sat nav leave a lot to be desired. I made the mistake of contacting a company called 'Command' in the UK and they charged me £600 to fit a USB module that allows me to connect an iPhone 5s (which I had to buy extra as I use an iPhone X that the system would not accept) to the system. But, it is far from ideal. The multi-stack CD box behind the seats had to be disconnected, the dash tv screen shows very little detail about the track being played etc. The sat nav is very dated too. Has anyone found a way to upgrade these things in a way that doesn't cost a fortune? I have seen head units for sale on ebay but they usually come from China or Hong Kong and I am not convinced they are as fantastic as the add would try to portray. I live in the UK so please take that into account when/if you are making suggestions/giving advice. Thak you in advance for your time and help. Robin.

I just installed one of the Seicane's in my 04 SL500. The install isn't that bad once you figure out what actually needs to get done (cut wires from amp harness and splice them to the speakers). I Removed the amp and went from the radio to the speakers. The sound is just OK.. i'm going to put a couple of amps in, and i'm confident the sound will be better. The rest of the unit is actually pretty good. i run a wireless wifi hotspot on my phone and then i can use Waze on the unit.. it works really nice. The one thing that I haven't been able to get working well is radio reception, but I'm not sure that it's the radio's fault.
i've since seen others install pioneers and alpines in their SL's but i wanted the factory look, and i think the Seicane did it.

Thank you very much for your reply. That is very helpful indeed. I have done a search for Seicane here in the UK and looked at their units. The Android 8.0 Operating system looks ok (and keeps the factory look which I too prefer) but there is no mention of iOS/iPhone/Apple. Have you tried to run apple products on your head unit? I’ve been down the same route as you. Factors I wanted were to keep the stock look, use of all steering wheel buttons and I have the Bosch surround system so I wanted to keep the same sound quality.
Removal of the Command and replacement with an Android system can affect the steering wheel controls and definitely won’t work the stock surround set up (that’s assuming you have that set up). That means you’ll end up having to potentially remake all the speaker connections and add aftermarket amps etc.
I chose to have a Dension 500 system installed which mimics the CD Changer through the MOST system. Works seamlessly and with my iPod classic and also iPhone.
It can be a bit clunky to navigate through the song menus on the Command but once you learn how to do it, it’s perfect, for what I want. Looks totally stock, steering controls all work, uses OEM system so surround features are retained and it also displays all the song info on the Command interface.
