Need help retrofitting steering paddle shifters in 2007 SL550

Hello, I have 07 SL550 and wanted to add paddle shifters to steering wheel. So far, I have updated N80 (steering column module) that supports it and N135 (paddle control module developed and manufactured by Latemodel21). The vehicle so far doesn’t recognize the addition. Does anyone know what else needs to be done? Thank you in advance, Vadim

Hi Vadim,

I found Chris's (a.k.a. "latemodel21") post about this:

https://mbworld.org/forums/sl-class-...ml#post7222068

He says:

You need to add the correct n135 module (for cars that came with the amg appearance package) AND, you will likely need to change the N80 (the amg appearance pack cars came with a different N80/jacket tube module that supported paddles).
the correct N80 module is 033 545 6232
the car also needs to be coded 428 HOWEVER, it is possible that if you get the N80 out of a car that had the 428 option that the N80 is already coded sufficiently.
So, I believe you told me you added the n135 module, but did you swap out the N80 steering column module? What is odd is that I cannot find any programming in SDS for the N80 module related to paddle shifters, even though Chris mentions that it might need coding. I also checked EXA and CGW and find no settings there. I am doing this in "simulation" mode, and I have found that it does not always give all options for coding. Maybe Chris has information of what/how to code this?

Hi Rudeney,
Any insights or suggestions are welcome on this.
While I have worked out many complete solutions for Paddles in other applications (which I have successfully provided for more than 6 years, both directly ... and through DCT motorsports and MA Carbon). THIS retrofit is one that I originally sorted thru the hardware and configuration changes as a favor and then passed on the info (correct N80, correct N135, and minor changes to wiring at N80) to others who in turn have successfully finished this (with the assistance of Local MB support). I have reached out to a few who have succeeded using the info I provided, but they were unable to give definitive info about how their local MB specialist finished it ...

my understanding is that what is needed after changing to the correct N80, correct N135 (and minor changes to wiring at N80) is ....
1) have dealer add +428 to VeDoc

2) then, wait one hour to one day and then online scn code any modules that need updates for this (one or more of the following... trans ecu, n80, sam, ...)

I supplied the N135 to the OP (a functional copy) and am hopeful that he will be able to get this going. I am trying to assist, but any input would be appreciated

thank you for all that you add to this forum!
Cheers,
Chris

Oh, I see. This means having MBZ update VDOC, then do SCN coding. That means the dealer has to do it - we can't do this with our "Chinese clone" SDS setups.

Hello all,
I have successfully completed the project. Below is brief description of what was done.

1. Replace existing N80 module with the one that has the part number: 0335456232
2. On the socket that plugs into N80, cut wires 1 and 13 and splice wires on the socket side together. Cut wires 8 and 14 and and splice wires on the socket side together.
3. Source correct N135 module for use with option 428 (paddle shifters interface module) ...
These are difficult to find, but are being produced by (and can be purchased from) Chris Messmer (Latemodel21@yahoo.com).
Plug it directly into the clock spring. Plug shifters into N135 module.
4. Add Code 428 to VeDoc. This should be done by the dealer.
5. Perform SCN coding for transmission. This can be done either by dealer or by independent shop.

Once step 5 was completed, everything worked flawlessly

Thank you, Vadim
