Car’s at $15.000 now, 7 hrs to go in auction. What will it fetch, you guys think? One wonders what an OEM one-off like that can sell for. Different story than cars fitted with after market kits, I reckon.

The problem is, in the used car market, options do not increase the value very much. That $7700 Designo option might be worth $500 now over a non-Designo car. Then again, some colors like red can be quite polarizing, so it might even reduce the market price.

This is absolutely true, i was in the car business for awhile and red cars were always given less money than say a black/white/silver car. We don't even take red SUVs at my dealership, they just sit and sit, but top money goes to white/black cars. I currently own 4 vehicles, all are white lol.

Same here (NL), I bought a fire engine red Passat with a good discount. Everybody seems to love the colour, I love it. Easy to find on a full parking lot, too.

Obviously, black, white, gray and silver are the "safest" colors. For some strange reason, I tend to gravitate to blue-ish cars. I really don't like the color blue in a car, but I've have many that are a gunmetal colors. My CLK was a grayish-blue, and my SL and ML are both bluish-gray. I think the best color is silver. It's cooler than black, and better hides dirt, chips and scratches..

Car is beautiful. However, red is a hard sell. The interior is unreal.

Thanks, man. So do I. The plan was to sell the W113 and buy an R230, plus savings. I messed up the plan: came across the black car and couldn’t resist. Need the comfort and ease; folding the softtop is kind of heavy on my back-trouble, handling the hardtop without a strong helper or hoist is impossible.
There’s the noisy engine and her hair ending up in a mess, we’d be tired after daylong trips (and upon arrival weren’t always in the mood for chatting about her with a bystander...), and there’s nothing there that reminds you of forgotten lights or your handbrake, but boy is it fun.
More on topic here: I am reluctantly coming to the conclusion that a 53 year old Merc is far more reliable than an R230. We travelled through Europe with confidence, in a car that just went on and on without a glitch.
That’s why I’m selling the Pagoda with some reluctance.

Sorry - one more.. this pic refused to upload yesterday. What is shows is that ‘the last steel/glass MB dash’ just oozes that classic feeling.

I Just bought this car from Alec. The car is in great condition as described. I have owned about 10 MB and this is my 4 SL500. Alec is a great guy. Been following his auction on Bring A Trailer for awhile now.
Here's also a film I made about the car.

@Frederick: Please stop posting pics of your 230SL! It makes me insanely jealous! (no seriously, feel free to post pics - I love it!)

Pagoda machine room
Lots of metal, developing 150 DIN hp. ‘Drehfreudig’ as the Germans say: a surprisingly hi revving straight six. Hence noisy, but quite responsive to the right foot.
Inlet manifold looks like it means business. (Exhaust manifold sits underneath).
Injection pump (Bosch), insides are like a mini motor. Indestructible when maintained and wickedly expensive to get fixed and tuned.

What a tease. I checked prices in the US for this beauty - starting from $40K and all the way up to $150K, So it is not enough to get extra place in the garage and one less wife, but I also need a dead rich uncle who would leave me an inheritance.

It took us through (western) europe on vacations, loaded to the brim with our tent and camping gear. I felt rich using it for what it was built for, rather than being a collector keeping it garaged clean. Technically, the car got all the TLC it needed, from an expert, but I’ve never been sissy about using it. I don’t think the top priced pagoda’s are having much fun.
