SL/R230: Fraud

A close call, which I attribute to my naivety. There was a 2009 sl 65 for $29.5K on Craigs list, which sent me to a website purportedly run by Edmunds escrow service, free delivery from Texas, 7 day return option. Everything looked good, Carfax provided, a copy of the title sent, website, independent inspection provided, telephone conversations with the company. The only way I found out it was a scam was that I took the title to DMV to check it out and they told me the name on the title was different than their records. I then searched on Edmund scam and learned this was a scam. I don’t know how one avoids such scams, but before sending any money, take the title to AAA or DMV. These crooks had a Wells Fargo bank account to wire the money to. I was persistent about the title because I’ve bought a car once that the person had not removed a lien (understandable) and it was a mess.
Also, if anyone knows zachmac on BaT, could you you ask him to PM me? He seems very knowledgeable and like his opinion on something else.

You see the "www.edmubnds.com" but that not where you're going. The actual domain you are routing to is "en-usa.online". They have just created a subdomain called "com" and a subdomain of that named "edmunds" and a subdomain of that named "www". Basically, anyone can do this. Once you own a domain, you can pretty much create any subdomains you want.
Scammer do this hoping you won't notice that the "edmunds.com" or "bonkofamerica, com" is not that actual domain but a subdomain of their scam site.
