How to replace the R230 gas cap
I purchased this gas cap replacement:
https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/mer...cap-2114700405
This morning I removed the old cap with it's broken tether. There were no error codes for leaks.
I installed the new cap and then came the "hard" part, attaching the tether.
The tether is attached to this retaining plug on the fuel door arm:
The plug can be removed by pressing in the locking pin, I used a push pin:
Now the plug can be forcibly removed with a flat blade or trim tool. I used a flat blade and you can see the damage I did to the surrounding trim. Be careful not to lose the locking pin, it will go flying.
Insert the tether over the plug, insert the plug into the fuel door arm
Insert the locking pin into the head of the plug
Done.
I'm keeping the old cap as a back up spare.

the gas cap replacement is actually easier then shown above (and does not leave pry marks or risk damaging the push pin).
Rather than prying the pushpin out of the plastic piece (as shown above)
1) lightly pry the plastic piece (as shown below)
2) then remove the pushpin by pushing its center out some as shown (or all the way through)
3) reassemble with new cap
Cheers,
Chris
Lightly pry here
piece is removed easily with no damage
at this point, you can push the center of the pin all the way through, or push it back some (as I did in the photo)
lift push pin away and re-assemble with new gas cap
New cap installed. Good as new with no pry marks or compromised pushpin

Excellent tips all around.
i used the OP message and had no issues (with scrapes or bends) using a trim tool to release the pin and then carefully pop the flange (ready for that pesky pin).
Took about 10 minutes all around and new cap attached with strap.
Peace and thanks again for all the sharing!
