2007 sl550 vario top issues

Need some help!! Recently purchased 2007 SL550 with top not opening..looked up video on YouTube for fixing sagging flap did the fix myself and top opened up. Now all of sudden the top works when it wants too. Totally sporadic. Same with the trunk. Checked all fuses they seem to be ok. New battery was replaced in the trunk along with new trunk motor before I purchased car. Somebody suggested taking fuse 71 out for a reset. Any other suggestions?? Somebody also suggested bad trunk divider switch but would it not work sporadically if that was bad?

If that switch were the cause, then a message indicating so would appear in the instrument cluster display.

I would use a diagnostic tool to see the state of the prerequisites the roof controller needs to initiate a roof operation. For that I recommend a $300 Chinese-cloned Star Diagnosis System (SDS) from aliexpress.com.

Alternatively, find an independent shop equipped with SDS. If you go that route to keep the cost down I'd be specific about what you want (the state of the prerequisites).

MBZ published a good diagnostic aid that might be helpful, too:

Thanks for quickly replying to my post. I have another dilemma the roof was completely closed and all set to take to the Mb dealer and the wife decided to put the top down and upon doing so it did not complete its operation. So I cannot close the trunk completely manually it looks like the top didn't go completely down in the trunk so when i go to close the trunk its hitting something in the back so it won't close. seems like the top needs to go lower in trunk in order to shut trunk. also its say top in progress on dash and red light is on for trunk opener on drivers door. tried disconnecting trunk battery for 30 minutes to see if it would complete cycle and let me manually close trunk. Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated. just need to close trunk at this point Thanks.

I'm afraid that you'll have to close the roof manually - search forum for instructions on how to do it without SDS (I assume that you do not have SDS). Another option is to drive to the dealer with trunk not completely closed. I tried to open the roof manually and was unable to do so due to the same trunk lid issue. Had to close the roof manually, but I do have an SDS, so closing the flaps was easy.
