steering wheel change

Hello everyone, I am thinking of changing the steering wheel to my SL 2005 for a more current model and that the car looks younger, I have been looking at Google and I have only found one person who makes the buttons of the new steering wheel work well, it Mus Lum calls, he has given me a price for just the steering wheel wiring and it seems a bit expensive to be just a steering wheel wiring (the wiring is worth twice as much as the steering wheel costs me) I would like to know if someone has changed their steering wheel for a more current model and that all the steering wheel buttons work well in the dashboard.

This is the steering wheel that I want to install in my car but I have read that wiring modification is needed because the buttons would not work well and in the dashboard there would be error.

As a last option I would install this steering wheel but I would like to know if someone has installed it on your SL and everything works fine, I would like to know if it is to remove the original steering wheel and install the steering wheel from the photo and everything works perfectly. Has anyone please installed this steering wheel in your car? thank you very much to all

Hi there - did you ever get your wheel changed? Do you the details for the person from your first post? May want to go down this route, too!

Thanks,
Gareth

Looks awesome - did you buy it ready altered or do it yourself?

Do all the buttons work?

Thanks,

Gareth

What was involved in the process? Was it tricky?

@NHSl550 - thanks for the link. Was looking for something very similar to Ivan's!

A friend of mine works electronics very well, he was the one who did all the work, I can't tell you how much work it takes to make the buttons work well and that the steering wheel fits the Mercedes SL. If you are very interested, I can give you an email and ask the price you charge for modifying the steering wheel for the Mercedes SL

Hi Ivan - apologies for the delay - been on holiday!

It would be great to get an idea of what is involved. I have a wheel and airbag, similar to the one below and would love to get this working!
https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/ZzYAA...mO/s-l1600.jpg

Is it as simple as rewiring the switches to the controller board from the current wheel or is it more complex? Would love to get some info...

Thanks, Ivan

The wheel/airbag that Ivan750 put in his R230 is NOT directly compatible with ANY R230. To make it work he had to have someone create a custom electronic interface in order to make the buttons and horn work. If you are looking for 3-spoke wheels that ARE directly compatible with your 2003 SL500 (and ALL R230s), these (see pictures below) 2009+ R230 wheels/airbags are 100% compatible. Be careful if shopping online as most sellers do not understand that 2009+ CLS and SLK airbags are NOT compatible (though both outwardly identical AND marked with part numbers that start with "230"), and they will regularly list these NON-compatible airbags as SL/R230 bags .

Sport wheel (shown with small-black paddles, larger aluminum paddles also fit in this wheel)

SL65 Black Series wheel with paddles

NON-sport, NON-paddle wheel

These wheels are also available with other colors (factory and custom) and some are available with woodgrain (or updated to carbon fiber). I generally only stock all-black versions (I currently have all 3 styles shown w/airbags on hand). If you have any questions about these and other options for updating your wheel, feel free to send me an email at Latemodel21@yahoo.com.

Cheers,
Chris

Chris,

i m liking the look of the sl65 black series wheel. What is that costing and will it fit in my 2004 sl600? What else if anything needed to get the paddles to work as well?

Hi Dyc1077,
To add paddles, to your 2004 SL600, you would need to change the N80 module (I can give you the part number you need, or you can get it from me at I have them on hand) AND you would need to have programming done to add the "428" option (and then enable paddles). Normally, you would also have to add the N135 module (mounted under air bag), but this function/circuitry is incorporated into the 2009+ airbags (so you would not need this module IF you are upgrading to the 2009+ wheel/airbag. Send me an email at Latemodel21@yahoo.com and I can answer any questions you may have.
Chris
