SL/R230: Foxwell NT510 Review

Let's steer this topic back on track now.
Thank you. Any performance issues after adding the Volvo-specific functionality vs. just the default Mercedes you started with?
My use case will be for Mercedes, Audi, BMW and maybe Ford. While it is nice having dedicated STAR, INPA/PA Soft/NCS-Expert (BMW), VAG-COM (Audi) and FORScan (Ford) setups in my garage, I relish the idea of a powerful, activations-capable, all-in-one to take with me on the road.

Ive found that the Volvo software is not as good as the Mercedes Software. It hasn’t affected the Mercedes use at all though. The upload of Volvo adds an extra “Volvo” button onto the initial user interface so on start up and plugged into the car you just use the appropriate manufacturer button from the initial interface.
The Jaguar software I added for $60 yesterday isn't as good as the M-B software either.
The Mercedes software is obviously based upon Star Diagnosis given the menus, their paths, and contents are practically identical. I suspect other Foxwell software products are similarly based on a manufacturer's proprietary software, and therefore are only as good as that software and no better.

I also have a well-rated wireless OBD tool (and a few of the well-known apps), but they all have generic functionality. Good to scan/clear basic codes and monitor some real time data (was helpful in tracking IATs when modifying an M113K car) but that's about it.

Totally agree that the foxwell is based on (or a rip off) of manufacturer even some of the exact wording
Hardened forum posters want to know non standard because it goes against what they are trying to sell. Always the case and why people get fed up with cliquey forums ... My way or the highway attitude
I have Xentry and Foxwell - tbh I find the foxwell more use. Xentry is a clunky pile of junk like most manufacturer software

I've had a Foxwell 520 for over a year. Original purchase was based on it's ability to access essentially everything in my 2009 Aston Martin DB9. I was very satisfied with it's functionality on that car, so expanded it to Mercedes ('03 SL55), Audi (2013 A8), and BMW (2007 Mini Cooper S). It doesn't do everything on the Mini, but does enough on the other cars to continue providing good value. I do have an SDS system, but find the Foxwell more convenient.
I feel this thread should have been managed better by the moderator(s). Too many posts by a user that aren't pertinent and adding info that does not relate to the Foxwell or it's directly comparable products. Seems like a semi-continuous advertising campaign.

I came across this thread while researching the diagnostic options for my '04 SL55. Looks like you have put a lot of time and effort into helping people make an informed decision. Definitely appreciated!
in your review, you said the 510 Elite will perform the rodeo test on ABC equipped vehicles. Can you tell me if it will also allow active testing of the leveling sensors, and even better, allow me to calibrate them?
Thanks!

Print from Foxwell quick scan
Hi guys, first post, thanks for accepting me
New to me 2004 SL600, still a couple of weeks away from getting plates on it here in Norway. Car drives nicely and only SOS malfunction error on startup. Just bought and tried a Foxwell NT530 (similar or same as NT510 Elite I think) quick scan.
I struggled a bit to get a print out, but saving on the device (it saves to the supplied, slot-in, memory card) and then using the supplied memory card reader and the FoxAssist/Data Manager (Windows) found at www.foxwelltech.us, it lets you print a PDF. Attached is the output FYI.
I have not cleared any codes or done any active tests.

Andvib congratulations with your driving machine. Driving a V12 is a privilege. If your Foxwell is right your car has a hefty list of faults. Sounds to me the car needs to be driven and/or looks like you need a new rear battery, insufficient power from the rear battery conjures up all sorts of faults in the electronic systems. I think I saw all three SAMs (computers) being reported as not responding, same for the ‘supervising’ computer called EIS (built onto your contact-starter lock). If the car drives at all that would be an unlikely status so I would recommend to charge that rear battery or replace it (and as a routine trickle charge it, the car eats power even in sleeping mode) first of all. Then re-run the diagnosis and find help here from the cracks (I’m a beginner myself).

@Frederick NL thanks for your comments. Yes, thinking to replace the rear battery, It is on a trickle charger ATM but looses charge fast when disconnected. Car drives nicely and only has 53k miles on it. Wondering what the difference is between a "Stored" fault and a "Stored (Event)" fault. Strange there are no time stamps anywhere in the Foxwell output. Ill report back post battery change

It might be worth your while to measure the draw on that battery. I read on a forum (possibly this one) that the systems should be in sleeping mode 22 minutes after you’ve parked. Permissible draw would then be around 50mA. A healthy battery will be weak after 2 or 3 weeks. You’d still be able to start the car (front battery feeds starter motor only, no other consumers there, so it should last for months) but would have to wait for non-essential systems (like airco....) to be allowed to operate. That then takes 15 mins or so of driving, that’s why we always trickle charge the rear battery.

The Foxwell will report the voltage output by each level sensor, and you can evaluate their plausibility. They should be in the range of 2-3 volts DC. There is no need to nor is there a procedure for calibrating the sensors.

Thanks, was thinking (hoping) this. Havent been able to drive it much yet (no licence plates) so I guess Ill drive it a couple of weeks and recheck. Having it serviced / checked up when putting plates on it. Fingers crossed

I just got mine for my 2006 e320 cdi...
I think my trunk sam is on its way out. The keys wont lock the car, the foxwell has multiple errors in the rear sam. I have a few abs codes that come and go.
I know my trunk leaks and i have to address that.
Has anyone used the 510 elite to change a SAM?

When reading codes with the 510 can you select the module you want to look at like trans, abs, and so on,I'am assuming that you can,my Mac tools/spx scanner lets me on american cars but not German cars,I just sent my conductor plate out to be repaired, when talking to them they told after re-installing the plate I have to clear the codes though the trans module,

Yes. I've had a Foxwell for a while but haven't taken a deep dive into it until recently when I had a shifter and transmission code to fix.
It's a bit slow but you don't have to do a full scan each time you have a fault - it lists the modules on the car - drive, transmission, chassis etc then lists each section within that category. You only need to scan the section where you think your issue lies.
To do a full scan takes about 10 - 15 minutes.
In summary it's a very comprehensive bit of gear for the home mechanic. Would I buy one again? 100% yes.
I cannot now see any R230 owner being without one, or something similar.
