Need the forums help on a potiental new purchase

I'm looking to purchase a 2006 or 07 sl55. I currently own a w222 s class and looking at adding a second Mercedes to my garage I know nothing about the sl55 other than everyone keep saying the roof motors or something in the roof is faulty. I'm a noob when it comes to the sl55 I'm sure the forum members can steer me in the right direction, I'm all ears and thank you to everyone in advance.

I suggest that prior to purchase you have each of the vehicle's c. three dozen computers scanned for diagnostic codes. This could reveal a problem that is not obvious and wouldn't become apparent until driving the car a few times. Further, as a check of the hydraulic suspension I'd run a Rodeo Routine and look for it to complete the 15-minute test without pausing frequently.

I bought an ‘05 SL55 a few months ago. Had a Pre Purchase Inspection performed by an MB Indy specialist. Amazing car. I love doing my own work on it and everything works perfectly.

Good choice for a 2nd car. I have a W221 and R230 in my garage, and they are night and day for vehicles.

Search for "R230 buyer's guide" in the forum and get a feel for what the weak points are with this car. It has plenty of strong points, but it can be a cruel mistress if not treated well.
Here's one: https://mbworld.org/forums/sl-class-...yer-guide.html

It should be added here that the SBC (braking) system is now a 25 year warranty (in USA) item that is covered for any issues.
The downside is you will not have much braking effect when it does fail, and you will need to change your shorts or seats afterwards.

If you are a DIY type of guy, it is an affordable supercar. If not, get friendly with a local independent mechanic who knows this car, and plan to spend some for preventative maintenance and repairs.
And don't drive it unless you want to fall in love!

This place is a joke.
The ABC suspension will haunt you for your entire ownership period. It's a really neat system, when it's working- and under warranty.

If I were you i'd gun for an 07-08, there were many changes made after the 06 worth considering. Bigger throttle body, bigger fuel injectors, better looking front bumper and wheels (IMO) What is your budget, the 07 is a lot more rare to find and are a little bit more money.

ABC isn't bad once you get the concept down, if you can turn a wrench, you can fix it yourself. 07 they made it easier to change the leaky lines than the previous years.

Agree with all posts above. I chose the sl550 to join my w221 you’ll love the pleasures your benzes will bring in their own uniquely designed and built ways. The 07 and beyond have upgraded abc pumps and other components which helps. Just change the fluid and filter every 30k miles and you will be fine. The roofs and components are solid but tricky set of things that can fail or need adjustment. No deal killers in any of these. Good luck with the search and keep us posted.
