2004 SL500 Air Condition

My apologies if there are posts related to this subject I missed.
I’m new to Mercedes Benz.
I bought the wife a 2004 SL500.
Great choice. Great decision. She loves it.
One problem. No AC.
No messages. No AC off indication.
We drive on cooler afternoons. She wants the AC.
Trying not to go to Mercedes dealership.

Thoughts/Recommendations?

Welcome to the forum. Enjoy the ride

For the AC it might be as simple as out of gas. It doesn't happen that often, and usually lasts for a good amount of time, but it still does. It will not give you any codes or anything, it will just blow hot air.
IT might be a leak as well, which also is not that uncommon. I'd recommend checking with the guys that refill the AC, they can check for leaks as well. Usually around $50 service.

Regards

Good advice ^^^
First step...diagnostics.

Does your AC compressor turn on?
That is the 'click' and the drag on the engine as the compressor starts compressing Freon. It may be the compressor is not kicking in for any number of reasons.
I've had compressor relays stop working on a cross country though the South, and a plastic knife jammed in the relay contacts kept the AC on. This prevented my spouse from killing me.

If you are low on Freon, and handy with a wrench, get a can of R-134 refill that has the pressure gauge with it.
Hook up the gauge, with the compressor running, and see if the pressure is in the 'green'. If not, the refill from the can may do the trick.
But don't expect it to last, as it will eventually leak out again. But it may get you through summer, for a small sum of cash, or your life.

The compressor on the R230 is a variable-displacement type which is always engaged. Having no Star Diagnosis or refrigerant gauges I would measure the control voltage to the compressor. To do that you get under the car and unplug the two-socket electrical connector to the compressor and measure the voltage. With the A/C on and the defrost on there should be 12 VDC.
