R230 roll hoop cylinder replacement?

Hoping to get some guidance re: a roll hoop issue.

The roll hoop will only raise up 1/2 way accompanied by a matching/clicking sound. Fault codes that come up are B1198-004 s83 / Roll Bar up down limit switch not operating. Would this cause the roof not to open? If the hydraulic cylinders need to be removed and rebuilt, has anyone ever documented the safest way to do this (I know the entire system is under incredible spring tension) or is their a good DIY video of how best to make this happen?

Thanks, Doug

Here are two pictures of the roll bar assembly. I took these while replacing all the cylinders in my car. One side of the roll bar (driver side in US) has the gas spring lift and the other side (passenger) has the cylinder. Both sides have ratchet locks that are controlled by hydraulics. If it clicked while going up, then one of these didn't press the release.I would think you could manually pull the roll bar up. You should hear the spring ratchets as it goes up. The cylinder is on the back side of the assembly, which is easy to remove. Three bolts hold the assembly. Once the bolts are out, press the ratchet release and you can easily compress the assembly to remove it. Be sure the roll bar is all the way up otherwise the spring will force it up, breaking your fingers on the way. You can replace all the hydraulics without removing the gas spring. I wish I knew that when I started...

Another tidbit: The plastic cover on the roll bar slides DOWN to remove. Don't pry it, just use your fingers to slide it down (assuming the roll bar is up).

Thanks for this!
It's a huge help to simply get the perspective/experience from someone who has actually done the job. The ratcheting sound was definitely coming from the driver side as the roll hoop stopped on its way up which made me think that the teeth had potentially gone. But, by looking at your photos it would seem that the metal in that piece is plenty strong.
Cheers, Doug

The roof controller must receive confirmation via limit switch that the roll bar has lowered as a prerequisite for the roof moving to the open or closed position.

Since you hear a ratcheting sound when the roll bar raises, I think that indicates that one or both of the bar lock release cylinders isn't functioning. On each side a pawl is held against a toothed rack by a spring to keep the bar from lowering, and to lower the bar the roof controller actuates a small hydraulic cylinder on each side to release the spring pressure. The second photo in the earlier post plainly show one of the cylinder/spring pairs.

Hello. I also have a problem that will require removal and rebuild of both roll bar cylinders. Is there a better dyi for this procedure.
the drivers side is leaking and I am planning to remove both and send for rebuild.
Thanks.
