I've had a thought - is the reason I cannot find the cable on eBay because breakers are selling it as part of the engine loom? There are none of the other (non-compatible Distronic looms at all, even from other cars). Is it all taped up with it?
Could I then just buy the correct loom second hand and dismantle?
Also, why would the one I need be described as 'repair kit'? Seems odd given the others are not...

Andreas - I have another question. Can you (or anyone else!) tell me what plugs in here? I cannot see this plug on your cable and the shot of your cable looks almost the same as mine. I'm wandering if I can get mine altered (if it needs much altering!) but I still do not know what goes in the other socket!
The six pin plug is the same (although mine only has four wires) - 1(red), 2(-), 3(-), 4(green/white), 5(green), 6(brown)
The two pin white has green and green/white going to the car
The earth hoop is there
This the blue fuse has red going to it.
I don't know the difference between these cables - could it be the black two-pin on yours is different to the white two-pin on mine? Could it be this simple?
The red marked thing is no plug, it is nothing, maybe something what the very first modells needed. The six pin plug is is equipped with four wires only. It looks like your cable is right, do you know the part number? If you lift the carpet on the left side (dont know which side at RHD cars) you will find two can distributor. One with brown and one with green cables. It has to plug at the "green" distributor. And yes, it looks like it could and is this simple.
It is important that the sensor is aligned as precisely as possible. Otherwise, it will align the radar with a car in a different lane.
Stand the car 5 to 10 meters (feet, gallons, what ever) in front of a wall. The further away, the more accurate.
Measure the height of the center of the sensor in the car. Transfer the height to the wall. If you want more precision, use a transparent hose filled with water like a spirit level.
Attach a laser pointer to a straight board. Place the board on the left wheel opening. Point to the wall in the high of the first mark and set a second mark.
Turn the board 180 degrees and place it on the right wheel opening. Point to the wall in the high of the first mark and set a third mark
The error is compensated by the turning. This means that the center of the sensor is exactly in the middle of the two markings two and three.
Now you know the height and center of the sensor from the car on the far wall. At this point on the wall you attach the laser pointer and point the beam at the center of the radar sensor.
Then you place a small mirror on the surface of the radar sensor. The laser beam is directed back to the laser pointer.
Now you calibrate the radar sensor with the screws until the beam is directed back exactly to the laser pointer. The result is more accurate than factory calibration.

I do not see the problem. If the radar housing is connected to pin 6 and pin 6 to ground via the brown wire, then the radar housing is connected to ground via it, right?
My '11 S550 has Distronic Plus and it is great. I have been curious how well the earlier systems compared. Does it brake at all, or is it just throttle control?
