Mercedes SL (R230)
Distronic retrofit on MY2005 help!

Hi - I am attempting a retrofit of Distronic onto my R230 and really need some help!

I have the new star, the sensor, bolts, etc. all following the guide at:
http://mercupgrades.com/Distronic+Re...rticle-69.html

I have fitted the sensor using the bolts - all good. However the sensor has two sockets on it - let's call them big and small. The big one plugs directly into my cable I have however I don't have one for the other, smaller round plug. The cable only has the big one, an earth, and a small, two-wired plug (not sure what to do with this!)

Have anyone fitted this and know what to do? I've searched around to no avail!
Thx

I’ve considered this retrofit. That article says the sensor design changed for 2005, where the computer and sensor were integrated into the same assembly. The sensors before 2005 have the big plug and what looks like a ground connection.

The connections shown in sivikvtec's picture comport with the Distronic electrical schematic, while Eman's do not.

Hi Bob can you confirm the schematics are the same for model year 2004 and 2005 vehicles?

I also have a 2005 like the OP and am struggling to figure out when MB updated the system.

You can't just buy similar electronic parts like that
Like sivikvtec shows you, and he really works on his cars, electronic parts might change by build years
give me your VIN and i'll list you the right part for your car

June 1, 2004 and later production have no separate Distronic controller, and all electronics are integrated with the sensor within its housing. The only connections are power and CAN.

So just four wires?

CAN L
CAN H
12V
GND

Run the two CAN wires to the nearest hub (I assume there is one in the underhood SAM and then tap into voltage/gnd somewhere?

I think the correct wire harness for model year 2005+ is either 2305407405 or 2305402110. They are less than $20/each.

2305402110 is a harness and 2305407405 is a “repair kit”

I cannot find photos of either online.

It is A2305407405. But you have to change the can connector housing. Can must connect to the engine CAN, not as manufactured for the body CAN. The connection point is under the driver footwell.

Now we are getting somewhere! Have you successfully done this retrofit yourself?

Why won’t the body CAN work? Seems odd that mercedes would have made this harness incorrectly.

Yes i did. I did not try out if the configuration will work with the conection of CAN at the body CAN. It is stated somewhere (in WIS?) that it must be the engine CAN, even the slot at the CAN bus distributor is discribed. So i changed it and it works.

Take this cable and the new housing. The cable includes the fuse you need to conect it inside the passenger SAM, the right place you will see at a fuse sheet. The original ground screw is under the passenger headlight, unreachable without disasembling this part. Take the screw of the SBC break instead.

Mount the sensor close to the body, otherwise you will get problems to fit the grille. It is possible to adjust the sensor by yourself, all you need is a laser pointer and a mirror. After installation, reset the sensor first.

The hardest part of the retrofit is to change the star

Thanks. My car is MY2005 - the facelift version. According to the site I linked, this part should be suitable for my car. Is the site wrong?
if it helps, my VIN is: WDB2304672F088344

Thanks,
Gareth

I am thinking about this retrofit too.
The build date is 13th April 2004.
‘Looks like it should be separate sensor and controller.

Thanks for the info. I have the wiring harness - A230 540 2110 and I have the sensor unit: A230 540 1817 but they don't have the same connectors as indicated in the original post. Sorry if I am making a stupid mistake, am I doing something wrong?

Thanks,

Gareth

Yes, you do. As i wrote: You need the harness A2305407405. There is no AUTONOMOUS INTELLIGENT cruise control in your car.

I am considering this retrofit also. After reading everything I can find on the forum there are still many unanswered questions. Such as where do we obtain the switches that must go in the car? Where is the motor CAN to hook up to? Watching thread for further info. Thanks.

This? At the dealer, like the other parts, too.

The connection point is under the driver footwell. Take a look under the carpet.

Many thanks for the picture. Is the picture of a factory installation or a retrofit?

After looking at picture more closely I see the old switches. Thanks again.
