If you can drop the trunk lid then the hydraulic trunk supports are shot. And please correct me if I am wrong when they have lost their strength they don't help assist the opposite side of the trunk that has to come up when lowering the top.

2005 R 230 SL350 (M112 3.7). Sold the 1966 W113 230SL recently
Those two gas struts have no function in the reverse opening of the trunk lid. There is third gas strut, next to the right rear lamp housing, that aids the hydraulic cilinder on the left.
