Just installed an aftermarket touchscreen receiver, and the auto dimmer is a problem

(For a 2005 SL500)

I just had a Sony XAV-AX5000 installed (https://www.sony.com/electronics/in-...ers/xav-ax5000), and while it's not great, it's still much better than the stock radio that was there. But my biggest problem is that it doesn't auto-dim, and I'm wondering if anyone here has any specific experience or advice on what I can tell my car shop guy what he should do about it. The receiver has something in its menu where I have to go into the system settings, turn on the auto-dimmer setting to get it bright to see in the daytime, but then have to go back into the same settings to turn the dimmer simply to "On" (turn the auto-dimmer off) to decrease the luminance. I also have to do this to change between the regular and the dark settings of the on screen map (White map versus a black map being shown).

Supposedly, this receiver can plug in to the illumination wire and adjust the brightness of the screen depending on when I turn my lights on and off. But since this car has an auto-light switch, I don't know if my guys knew how to wire this unit to the car's lights OR if the unit just has no idea how to interface with an auto-light system.

Does anyone here know what I can try and say to my car guy to even ask if he knew to hook up the system to the light switch? And if he didn't know, what I can ask him to do with the receiver to connect it to the light system?

Thanks so much!

Not very sophisticated, but you might use a manual 12V switch with to trigger that function on your audio unit? The auto dim function isn’t all that perfect in all situations anyway.

Can you connect the illumination wire to the ash tray light?

seems not wired correctly. i have an after-market unit and it works ok with the auto light settings.
check pg. 28 of the user manual.
Orange/white striped cable number 5 needs to be connected to your illumination signal already present and used by your previous original stock AV unit.

Sorry for the late bump, but I (finally!) just got some recent info from my installer.

After these couple of months of asking and looking around, he finally told me, "your car doesn't have an illumination wire to plug in to this unit." Is that true? Could my wire just be missing? In any case, is there anywhere I could connect a simple wire to some auto-light source (headlights, maybe?) that I could then connect to the head unit so I can have auto-dimming working?
