What is this button?

What is this button on the trunk of my SL550? I have looked in all the places I know but can’t find what function it has…or is it just a plug?

2005 R 230 SL350 (M112 3.7). Sold the 1966 W113 230SL recently
Someone said it is the location for a back up camera.

Thanks, I’m hoping that is what it is. I’m planning to install a wireless backup camera but don’t want to tear into a critical area.

S55, SL500, 500SL
With Keyless Go that is the button which locks unlock the vehicle from the rear of the car; without Keyless Go it does nothing.

Now the question is, where to put the backup camera. I don’t really care for those cameras on the license plate. 🤔

Bracket locates the camera behind the plate. It fits tightly so no screws or adhesive.

350 SL, R230 - 300 SL, R129 - 1964 Corvette Sting Ray Sport Coupe - Porsche 911 Twin Turbo (sold)
A friend of mine used that button for the back up camera. As said here this button is in use for cars with keyless entry so if you do not have that i cant see anything wrong in installing a back up camera there
