I have noticed the whole rear end of the internal roof liner is all lose. Rattles when you touch or go over a bump.
When I retract the roof I can see the rear edge of the roof lining from the boot. It looks likes the roof lining is not connected to any of the white clips, the liner can gently be pulls down a bit and all the white clips are visible.
I have broken clips before on my car so I reluctant to try anything.
Just looking at them (pictures below) they seem not be clipped into place. Or are the white clips broken??.
I can’t see the other part of the clip attachment under the actual liner.
If they are just not clipped into place what’s the easiest way to do it or is there a video etc…. I notice there is a plug at the front of the roof liner which I imagine is some type of bolt or locking that holds the front of the liner in place.
You need to pull it down and reglue the clips on the rear and probably on the sides as well. It has 5 clips on the back and two on each side. Clean everything, remove old adhesive, and use a 2-part epoxy to reattach. You clips look good to reuse. If you are missing any, they are not available from Mercedes but I have some that are professionally printing in nylon.
The piece in your picture is supposed to be part of the headliner. The push pin snaps into the slot in that piece and then the pins are pushed into the holes in the roof to secure it. The sides have a different piece that snaps into a metal clip in the roof. Once you drop the headliner, it will be obvious and you will see the old glue and mounting points.
I had a similar issue, the glue backing on all of the clips gave out. You can also try a good quality super glue, it has held up well. If you are careful it can be done without removing the headliner, especially if you operate the convertible top half open. Be very careful if you choose to do it that way, the top can time out and drop forward abruptly.
Hey Gerard, not sure if you've fixed this or not, have gotten many great replies on fixing it....I had mine do the same thing. I didn't want to pull the entire headliner down to glue them back only to have them come un- done again later, I ended up installing normal panel pins , very close to the same color. Rattle is totally gone, silent and cheap quick fix!

Hi Lee, I have the exact same problem. Could you elaborate on the "panel pins" that you used? Where did you get those? Im also hesitant to remove the entire headliner and found you solution a good alternative.
Appreciate your help,

i took my car to mate who is an upholsterer.
he removed the plastic studs and the plastic base they clip into.
The he just drilled four small holes into the plastic liner and into the structure underneath the put some small screws in to secure the liner to the structure beneath it.
problem fixed. No issues. It’s very poorly made don’t know why it just not screwed to start with.
Does anyone have the part number for the actual push pin itself? I have searched the forum and could not find the number, nor could I find it in the mercedes catalog. Amazon had these which look close, but when I google the part number, it supposedly is not for my SL550:

For such an easy fix, with bonding materials that are available today, I would discourage to resort to such alternative. Each to his own, naturally, but one day I'll want to sell the car in as proper a state as feasible.

Have the sam issue. When you glued the clips back to the headline, did you use clamps to hold the roof to the clips? Also, how long can one leave the roof partially opened before it will drop ?
Thx

Don't seriously work on the roof while it is waiting to crush you. In theory with the ignition on, the roof comes down after 7 minutes. With power off, after 15 seconds. In any case, secure the roof with a strut between the left front lock and its receptacle above the windscreen (there's a microswitch that you don't want to damage in the right receptacle). I made a strut from a telescopic household stick and always secure the roof when working on it.
