banging noise sounds like its inside fuel tank
Hi I have a banging noise when slowing down in my petrol tank as if something as come loose I run a SL500 2002 and think I have read somewhere in the USA forums that others have experienced similar problems my mechanic hasn't got a clue where its coming from but I am sure its the petrol moving something inside the tank,Has anyone had this happen to their vehicle?

Loose baffle. Later tanks are improved, but they literally built the car around the tank and it is a huge job to replace it. Most people repair it with a spring or magnet through the level sensor hole.

see the last posts... I used a water main shut off tool and needle nosed vice grip plyers to twist the dislodged baffle until held firmly in place in the fuel tank.

oh mate, sorry to hear, that. I wouldn't bother trying to remove the tank, you need days to do it and take the whole roof, interior, panels out. a lot of work!

Only an issue on very early cars I believe, not that that helps those who have the problem. 2004 or 2005 (?) cars onwards don't seem to suffer the ailment. There are some creative solutions out there to fix it!

I've changed the tank on my car. Yes it does take a while, about two days, but it's easy work and there is plenty of info on how it's done on You Tube. You have to remove the interior panels behind the seats and the boot panels. The only thing you do with the roof is position it to enable the tank to come out. The hardest part of the job is disconnecting the pipes underneath the car. I opted to to do this job because messing around inside an open fuel tank with steel tools is dangerous and didn't appeal to me at all.

Big job. Not sure if my 2004 built / 2005 MY qualifies for the updated tank. Hope I never hear the loose baffle. At least the repair won't baffle me thanks to the info on line.

See this thread here. I used two very strong magnets and it's held fine for the past few years.
