UCUP Ring installation direction of tapered end????

UCUP Ring installation direction of tapered end????

Does the tapered end go on the left/ on the end that is inserted into the cylinder???
Also, the plastic is so firm; is there an easy way to slide it onto the piston into the groove near the left end?

Aegea, the open part of the cup faces the piston. Unfortunately, you cannot slide the cup over the piston. To install the cup you will need to remove the rod open end. This is done by drilling the spot where the rod end joins the latch bracket. See pics below. I can tell your cylinder has been previously repaired with an O ring, which will hold for a while but is not the right way to permanently fix the cylinder. Notice that after separating the rod end, a set screw or similar holding system would have to be in place..! There are posts detailing this operation.

Also, by your picture your piston seal is missing too and the rod end bracket is bent! Perhaps you will be better getting a good working used cylinder...!

Hi elMacko,

That is just right information. Thanks... I see how it comes together. It looks like down time until Top Hydraulics gets me a trade-in.

cylinder piston retaining ring/clip removal-how without drilling hole??

How do I get the piston retining ring/clip pried out without drilling a hole?… see picture above. I am trying to pry up the edge of the ring where there is a gap with various picks to no avail.

Aegea, I do not recall the piston being held by a retaining ring...I think it was held as a flared shaft end, but I may be wrong..! Retaining rings at the piston isn't the best since it will allow certain motion along the shaft! If there is any, it will be pressed in the groove and will be hell to remove. On all the posts I have seen , the bracket end is the one that is removed to replace the hydraulic seal. As I said before, after breaking the pinched sleeve, there are few ways to put it back, cross pin, set screw or welding. Welding must be done with the exposed shaft well protected to avoid weld particles sticking to its surface.
If you have a lathe, a way how to remove the piston will be drilling near the ring or flare, then drill and tap the shaft end for a screw to hold the piston in place. Below you will see options. If there is a retaining ring, which I am not sure, or a flared shaft end. In both cases you can place an screw or re-flare by creating a pocket into the piston end. But for all this you need access to lathe and drill sets.
