Since i have a feeling that the steering wheel above will not fit my friends 2003 SL, R230 i wonder if the 3 spoke steering wheel pictured below will fit? I have to say i really do no think so myself.
The part number for this steering wheel is: A 204 460 33 03
Or will only SL R230 steering wheels fit even though i have heard that CLS steering wheels fit SL R230
Biggest problem, if i physical fits, is the steering wheels have an ECU in them (or at least a multiplexer) to convert the steering wheel controls to send down clock spring to the steering column ECU.
All R230 (2003-2012) airbags (4 and 3 spoke versions) are electronically compatible with all 2003-2012 R230s.
NONE of the wheels shown so far in this thread are "compatible" with any R230. If you want a compatible 3-spoke wheel, you would have to use one of these 3 variations of the 2009-2012 R230 wheel (also used on SLK and CLS in those years). HOWEVER, while the airbags (used in SLK and CLS) look identical, they are NOT electronically compatible with the R230 (DESPITE having part numbers that begin with "230") . SO, you can use a wheel from a 2009-2012 R230, SLK or CLS in your 2003 SL500 BUT, the buttons and horn will only work if you get an airbag made for a 2009-2012 R230.
I have attached picks of the 3 basic variations of these compatible wheels. The first (standard) variation can be found with both all leather and leather/wood mix AND with OR without paddles.
The second pic shows the "Sport" wheel (that has been re-wrapped to match interior) in a 2003 (SL55) . As indicated, the air bag is was/is 100% plug and play.
All of the "Sport" and "Black Series" versions (pics 2 and 3) came "all leather" and with paddle shifters (small black mercedes paddles or larger aluminum AMG paddles).
I can answer any questions about these wheels/bags (and have some of each available). Feel free to send me an email at latemodel21@yahoo.com if you have any questions. "Standard" wheel
