Smoke From Exhaust

This afternoon after driving to the office, I needed to run an errand and went out and started the 2005 SL600. Upon starting the car out the rear window I noticed a big puff of white smoke out of the exhausts that quickly disappeared, normal?

It happened to me once a couple of months ago when my SL600 had approximately 600 miles on the clock. It hasn't happened since. When I took it in for its 1000 mile check up, the service liaison said it was normal. I didn't take a great deal of comfort from that, but the car has performed nearly without fault since I bought it.

I plan to raise the issue when I bring the car back in, because of my recent experience of the car nearly stalling I mashed the pedal as I merged onto the highway. I am waiting for the Motorola cell phone to come in so I can have all the work completed at once.

While I haven’t specifically seen a sudden big puff of white smoke, I’ve noticed my car does produce more white vapor (which I’ve assumed is steam) for a little while after engine start than other cars I’ve owned.

Please let me know if you find out anything about this. As far as the phone goes, my dealer said there is new technology coming out from Mercedes with the phones, and to expect it in December. I didn't get take a phone at purchase and went with their recommendation to get the new phone(s). Any idea what is new with it?

I am not up with the latest on cell phone technology, but the new phone is supposed to be the Motorola v600 or v710, I am not sure which. The old phone (which is available if you are in a rush) is the v60. Is it worth the wait? I have no idea, but I am waiting nonetheless. I received my car at the end of July and was told that the phone would arrive in August or September. Now it sounds more like December. Let's hope so.

In my single experience, I can say without hesitation that it was white smoke and not just water vapor. It was a warm summer day and the smoke kind of lingered in the air after I started the engine. Fortunately it hasn't recurred.

The V600 for Cingular/ATT and the V7XX for Verizons customers. I am still waiting for my phone.

I've been waiting for the V710 but, still using my V60s in the meantime... My dealer can't/won't say when the new phone will become available.

The white smoke on initial start is normal. That's what I was told by my dealer and friends.

Could the white smoke be the result of some (normal??) oil leakage from the turbos that collects in the exhaust manifold while the engine is off? If the turbos are lubricated on a "total loss" mode - oil goes in, but never comes back - this would be a likely outcome. A little bit of oil makes a lot of smoke.

That’s an interesting theory, although I normally think of black smoke with burning oil not white smoke. If it is burning oil it must be terrible for emissions performance.
