Wind Screen Location???

Hello All.

2008 SL600, 52K

I'm looking for the wind screen, but I can't find it. I checked in the trunk of course, but didn't see it there.

I understand it might be missing from the car, but I'm wondering...

Is there some sort of fancy storage place for the wind screen? Some secret nook where it might be tucked away?

It would make sense on a car like this.

Many thanks!

Do you mean the piece of glass in front of the driver and passenger, where the wiper blades operate?

If you are talking about the thing that is supposed to pop up in back to keep from messing your hair, some cars do not have it. Have you tried running your VIN through www.lastvin.com to see if your car came with it?

On my R231, it is listed as Code 285.

it is too big to not notice it, there is not storage for it as it has a metal frame, you may need to buy one. It stays on the roll bar, you can pop it up with the roll bar and have the mesh, or it has another side that you can manually pull up.
If you go to the 5min 15 secs on the video you can see the wind deflector attached to the roll bar to give you an idea, one side unfolds.

Yes, I'm talking about the 'draft stop.'

Thank you for the good info! I will definitely try lastvin.

Cheers!

Thank you for the good info!

Yes, I could see the draft stop for a moment in the video. Rather snazzy looking.

However, I have read mixed reviews about it on the net. Some say it works, some say it doesn't...some say it impedes visibility.

Got any thoughts on the subject, about how effective it is?

Thanks again.

It works when driving at speed.

It does slightly impede rear visibility, you are looking through a net, but not to a point it makes it difficult.

However some people cant be bothered raising it manually (it takes 5 seconds and can be done while driving), so raise the roll bar to put it up.

Now this not only looks stupid, it also does impede rear vision.

Don't get an aftermarket screen, the original Mercedes one looks 100x better.

Its called a wind deflector and simply put it works perfectly. As I mentioned you can raise the roll bar if you want the net in the middle, but you get slightly better reduction in wind when you leave the roll bar down, then just pull up the hinged small deflector.
I drive from Scotland to London regularly and have driven 6 hours with roof down and using the deflector, very comfortable even in the snow!

Interesting! I was under the impression that the wind deflector attaches to the roll bar, and that the roll bar MUST be raised for the wind deflector to be used.

I also read somewhere that the wind deflector could "damage" the roll bar. Any truth to that?

Thanks again for the great info.

In my 05 R230, I leave the wind screen attached to the roll bar with the roll bar stowed. The wind screen is in two parts and is hinged, so with the roll bar stowed, I can have the wind screen down (flat with the rear deck) or I can pull the windscreen up while the roll bar remains stowed. With the roll bar up, the part of the wind screen that can be raised when the roll bar is stowed becomes horizontal and covers the area behind the seats (forms a 90 degree angle). I hope this helps.

From this and other cars I know that the horizontal plane of a wind deflector is very important. I prevents air from hitting downward behind the seats and pushing forward from between the seats. Roll bar down, deflector shutting off both the rear space ánd protecting your neck and hair cut is the way to go.
As for damaging the roll bar: forget it. No R230 is complete without its OEM deflector, so the slight imprints in the plastic (or leather) material are irrelevant- only visible when the deflector is taken off - as it shouldn't.
