Question 2004 SL600 Stalling at idle after two Mins

Hi All, I am the proud owner of a beautiful 2004 Sl600, she has been my pride and joy until we got swamped by a truck in some flood water back in December. The engine stalled but would crank no Hydro lock.
Initially we got a Red Coolant light and "Coolant!!" message on the dash, I panicked and thought we had a big problem but transpires it had fused the cooling fan which we have now replaced and its working fine.

Cleared the codes etc but now.. she starts fine and runs very smooth up to temperature and then coughs after a few minutes and dies. adding throttle makes no difference. It just dies but will restart eventually and run rough.
But there are NO Codes showing at all?
A browse on here has brought up the suspicion of an Ignition Transformer problem which might not throw a code? Anyone seen this before?
Its not related to coming off cold start.
Also and probably not connected to the same point, the cars been sitting for a couple of months, while the insurance company faff around and today the garage have gone to start it and its absoloutely haemoraging petrol out next to the filler cap! Anyone heard of that one before

I love the car and dont want the insurance company to write it off but they are keen to wash their ands of it.

Any help to save it will be very gratefully received.

Thanks in advance.
Mike

Please provide your location in your sidebar profile.

Have you checked for any coolant contamination in the oil or vice versa? Have you done an engine block test for exhaust gases in the coolant? If the car stalled when splashed with water, you can be assured enough water entered the engine to stop ignition OR something shorted out electrically. If the former, the cylinder block or head may have been fractured and when the car reaches operating temperature, coolant may be forced into the combustion chambers, causing the car to stall. A simple and inexpensive test of the cylinder block should be done by you or the shop. Use something like the kit below. If there are exhaust gases in the coolant, the fluid will turn pee yellow. That means you have a blown head gasket or a crack in the block or head somewhere. Hope it stays blue and then look for other causes. As far as the gas (a.k.a., petrol) squirting out by the filler tube, sounds like a blockage in the fuel line somewhere.

Your car is drive-by-wire for throttle and brakes, so when there is a logical/electrical malfunction, pressing the accelerator pedal will do nothing. When you say there are no codes, what scanner are you using to check? You must use a Mercedes specific scanner and not some generic, all-purpose OBD junk. Ideally, you will want a scan using XENTRY and a proper diagnosis. I recommend you contact @BenzNinja (www.benzninja.com) who can remotely scan and diagnose your car with equipment your purchase or rent.

Is it a US spec car? The US EVAP system is quite a bit different from the rest of the world. I suspect that your EVAP canister inlet valve is not venting. A bad valve would trigger a CEL, but there is a filter underneath the valve that plugs and that will not set a code. When your purge valve is active, it is supposed to draw air through the EVAP canister to pull out fuel vapor so that the canister can continue doing its job. If the vent filter gets plugged, it will try to draw a vacuum on the tank and you will not get fuel flow. Not exactly sure why it is puking fuel, but probably related. I'm not sure if you have trying filling fuel lately, but a plugged filter will kick off the fuel nozzle because the tank will build pressure instead of venting properly. I would try idling with the fuel cap loose. It will set a CEL for EVAP test failure, but you should get proper fuel flow.

Hi Guys thank you, I am in the UK its a UK Spec car.
Its my local Mercedes specialist thats doing the work not me, we have seen all the other codes for the fan etc pop up ok on the scanner, and cleared tham after rectifying teh problems but nothing is now showing on this one, ill check with them what the reader is.

Worth saying we were told it was the coil packs, but these have been changed out too for a new refurbished set, both banks £4000!! and still the problem persists the same.

Thank you for the information regarding the fuel line that makes sense if it has been trapped somewhere during the coil pack change.
