Error after co-driver SAM replacement

Good day everyone,

I am having issues with my 2007, R230. It is a SL350 with the M272 V6 engine (ex UK).
Unfortunately water made it was into the co-drivers SAM unit (it is on the left side, as it is a RHD car), next to the battery. The itial fault was horn not working. I was told by the garage to source a new (replacement SAM) and fusebox. Original SAM had part number A230 545 4132.
After searching I was unable to find the specified part, but I bought a second hand A230 545 2032, which is apparently interchangeable. The garage installed it, the new (used) unit gave error and they made from two one (my old SAM and the good fusebox from the part I bough).
Now the (expensive) story begins, although I have to say the garage has been very fair and honest.

If the relays are installed how they should be, relay inside slot M, there is no check engine light. After second start you get ESP unavailable, and after the third start (attempt) the engine won't start. You wait 5 minutes and you can start the engine again without alarms on the dash. however the second start will trigger ESP unavailable etc. Also the garage says that there are a lot of other fault codes, but these are not visible on the dash.

If the relay is installed in slot N (the wrong slot for the 2007 model), I do not get the ESP alarms. However, after the second start attempt you get the check engine light. Fault code P0560 - System Voltage Low. You can reset the code, but then it comes back again.
What I can see is that slot N is used on the pre 2006 model and some AMG models.

Before the fusebox was removed, the relay was definitely in slot M.

Is there someone who has seen this before or can give advice?
Could it be a idea to buy a different co-driver SAM (and fusebox) and try again. Maybe find a code closer to the original part code (even that they are interchangeable.

I love the car, but at the same time don't wan't to spend so much money on it that it is not worth it.

The photo is from the original SAM (Water damage) and the relay in slot M.

Looking forward to your ideas.

Rick

I forgot to mention the VIN number is WDB2304562F134369 (2007 SL350, RHD, M272 engine V6, ex United Kingdom)

I think you bought an incompatible SAM. The 2032 is an earlier version and was never fitted to a 230.456. Mercedes was pretty good at making parts backwards compatible, but obviously didn't have the foresight to know what features would be added on later refinements. Cut your losses and get the correct module.

including the ESP warnings and the P0560 code, it could indeed be related to the SAM unit and the compatibility of the replacement parts. Before purchasing another SAM, double-check the connections, wiring, and ground points around the SAM and fuse box. If possible, sourcing a SAM with a part number closer to the original may help ensure compatibility. Additionally, consider having a diagnostic scan performed to identify any hidden fault codes that may provide more insight. If the problem persists after replacing the SAM again, it might be worth consulting a specialist familiar with the R230 series.
