Angry Window regulator replacement

Does anyone know how difficult it is to replace the window regulator? Something seems to have broken on mine and I hear pieces that are grinding when I try to raise or lower the window. The window itself will not go down though.

There's probably a rat's nest in the wheel house of the regulator because of a broken or frayed cable. You can buy a repair kit on ebay.

I've had to do this job twice. 6 years ago and last year. You may want to consider getting a new regulator, but they are pretty pricey.
Even a used driver side is a bit pricey, if you can find one.

It's not too difficult of a job, but very time consuming. Getting the window back in and adjusting it is a bit of a pain.
Installing the repair kit is a bit challenging. Wrapping the cable around the wheel and getting it back into the wheel house is frustrating.
I have a crappy video on getting the regulator out. At least it gives you some idea of what's involved.

Is this your video? I've probably watched it about a dozen times to get some perspective. Given that it's 20 year old car, I'll probably go the replacement route.

Yes, it's my crappy video...lol. It was originally much much longer, but it was
very confusing and way too long, I just cut it down to removing the regulator.
The second time it broke, I made a much better video, just haven't done anything with it yet.

Ordered a window regulator. Wish me luck. @marko69 ... When you say it's very time consuming, how time consuming are we talking about?

If you are just removing and replacing the regulator (not repairing the regulator) I would gestamate maybe 4 or 5 hrs your first time.
Some tips:
-Before taking the window out, take some pics of the the lower front and rear window mounting plate/clamp.
-With a grease pencil, tape or something mark the position of the window to the plate, and the plate to the bolt. Helps to get the window adjusted back in the ball park
-At the front of the window mark the horizontal and vertical position as mounted on the clamp.
-Don't forget about the short close when adjusting the window. The window will sit lower when the door is open. You can tape or block the plunger in the door jam to keep the window all the way up.
-When you need to operate the window while the door panel is off, you only need to connect the white plug from the panel.
Hope this helps, Good luck!

Hi everyone…

I finally tackled replacing the window regulator on my r230. It was pretty straightforward thanks to @marko69 video. The window works but when I close the door, it doesn’t do that little slide up to seal with the other door. Is there some sort of calibration that you must do to get the window to seal with the smaller one?

Do you have the big silver end cap on the end of the door? That piece pushes in the plunger to tell the car the door is closed. Hard to tell, but it looks like the back window is in the short open position.

No. I kept it off to test it out. That explains why the car kept chiming like the door was open. I've got to fix a fitment issue at the front of the door, but once I get that worked out and install the end piece. Thanks for the guidance on that.

Still need to fix my alignment issue on the window but I added the trim plate and sure enough, it worked as it should. Thanks for all of the help.

Replacing a window regulator is moderately difficult if you're comfortable with basic tools. You'll need to remove the door panel, disconnect the glass, and unbolt the faulty regulator. The grinding noise suggests a broken cable or gear, and the window not moving indicates it's likely jammed.
