Michelin Tire Noise

Hi everyone..Just bought an 04 Sl500 with 10,000 miles. The Michelin Pilots were scalloped and made lots of noise. Just bought 4 new Pilots. After about 600 miles I am starting to get tire noise. The dealer says this is normal.
Is it????? They also said the tires were good for only about 15,000 miles.
Any comments?
Thanks

I have only about 1800 miles on my 05 SL600, standard tires have been fine and no noticeable noise that bothers me.

That normal, noise and vibration is very common for a high performance summer tire, especially with the wide(285) rear tires on the R230. One of my family members has a 2001 SL500(275 width rear tires) with Pilot Sports, they were replaced at about 13,000 miles, got new ones and they now have 3500 miles on them. The only noticeable noise and vibration in when coming to a stop, a low roaring sound followed by vibration just before the stop is made. In these tire sizes, the Michelin Pilot Sports are probably the quietest tire there is...

I have 12,000 miles on mine. The tires are very quiet. They are quieter than the tires on my SLK 320. I think I will get about 35,000 miles out of them like I did on my SLK320.

It might be your roads where you live. The roads here are better maintain than average. The worst roads that I have driven on was in Colorado Springs.

What would you say is the most miles that one can expect to get out of Michelin Sport 18s (255 front, 285 back) providing the car is driven gently? Anyone gotten more than 35000 miles?

Thanks to all who reply.

First thing I would do is make sure the alignment is correct. I've had problems with pilot sports making noise after few thousand miles. I wouldn't think normal driving would cause tires to scallop if inflation was correct. Michelin says Mercedes alignment specs on their cars causes tire wear and noise. Mercedes reps just say all performance rated tires will eventually make noise as they wear. Just a bunch of finger pointing IMHO.

Have the dealer check the aliment. It is free up to the first 12,000 miles or 12 months. I just got back my car today and my wheels had to be balanced again. Two times in 11,500 miles.

Tell me I have a hearing problem but I have been riding on Pilot Sports since 2003 and I can't hear any noise or feel any vibration. Now I am not a "hot rod" driver" so maybe there is the difference.

As for me, I am on my third set and none of them had noise of vibration. Cars were a 2003 SL500 and 2004 SL55. My 2005 SL600 hits land tomorrow, YAHOO!
