mv892727, I have attached two pages out of the service manual. The page labeled "File No.1" seems to have the instructions you need. However, I also included "File #2" for the AMG Black Series, which to me doesn't seem to apply to an '04 SL500s. Could be wrong. Use at you own risk.

Disconnect consumer battery first, then starter. Connect starter and then consumer. The starter battery should never be disconnected while the consumer battery is connected.

If you do it all fairly quickly, you shouldn't have to need any codes or radio reset.

If original radio, it will not be affected.

However you will probably need to reset the windows and clock, and if unlucky, the seat positions.

I have replaced the front battery twice in the last 3 years without disconnecting the consumer battery. When I was ready to do the install, I made sure all equipment was off, closed the doors and trunk, and stayed away from the door handles. I then disconnected the ground, then the power cable, switched batteries, then connected power and then the ground cable. No problems. I believe that this is fine in my 2003 SL55 as long as circuits are not switching.

I have also several times disconnected the starter battery without first disconnecting the consumer battery. As mentioned, if everything is off, it likely won't cause problems. However if you connect the consumer battery when the starter is not connected, you will get a warning and perhaps a sticky code. I don't remember if the warning/code goes away after a few starts or you need a scanner to reset the code.
