Front Grill

When I look at other 2007 SL550's (the year and make of the car I own), I always see different grill types. Why is this?

Thank you.

I bought an inexpensive replacement grill from ebay. It looks OK, but not quite OEM.
Even though I bought the car with few miles, the plastic mounting tabs for the original grill were cracked. My body shop tried to plastic weld the tabs, but it didn't work. One day while driving on the highway, the grill ripped off and flew over the hood; fortunately no one behind me.
IMHO, while the OEM grill has a better finish, its till just plastic. (My dad's 1968 280SL had a real grill made out of separate chrome pieces and all metal MB star.)

I just wanted to know why, at least for the year of my car, there seem to be different grills that came with it. No aftermarket or replacements. The original grills.

How do you know they haven’t been replaced in 20 years?

There are quite a few different grilles that MB put on these cars depending on trim level and options, and sometimes it’s difficult to tell the difference. Also the 2007-2008 cars have one fewer slat.

That's what I thought about the 2007-2008 years. But I have seen some with three slats, which prompted me to ask the question. So, in conclusion, the number of slats could mean different trim levels and options. Or that most likely they were replaced years later by adding a grill with three slats. Logically, that sounds correct.

Thank you.

Number of slats is always the year, if a 07-08 has four slats, someone has installed an older grille.

I removed that original ugly grill with a diamond type. A wonderful modern facelift.

I bought one that was all black but if I'd seen this one first, I would have picked it up instead. Love it!

I did see that one on ebay but it says 09-12, Happy to see it will fit an 04. There's also a listing like it for $136.
Looks like I'll be getting a new grill !!
