By the way, what is it that fails causing the trans issues?
***************** There are transmission cooling lines that go into and out of the radiator, there's a channel inside the radiator that cools trans fluid, eventually one day that part in there will develop a leak, may take 15-20 years, and may never happen... but if and when it does... trans fluid becomes diluted with antifreeze! I never knew of this until in 1984 when I owned a 1972 Buick Riviera that this happened to. One day ...no gears, put it in Drive, all you heard was a sound like gravel or marbles from the transmission! Back then, a trans rebuild for that car only cost $600 which, of course, at that time, was a lot of money for me. That's why a lot of hot-rodders would buy separate tranny cooler kits for their cars. I doubt there's room on an R230 for an aftermarket trans cooler, but with enough cash anything is possible, and if I were a Lottery winner, I know mechanics who could look into it for me. LoL
But that's why, since you're renewing so much on your car, a new rad is a cheap insurance because it's back to year one. KEEP all receipts for all the work you're having done on the car, and if you use Hagerty insurance they will give you a policy with a Declared Value, so in the event something happened to the car, it's already decided what they pay you, and their numbers are very good. Excellent insurance company.

Thanks Tony. I'm definitely going to put the new radiator and water pump on with all this work. I can't wait to get the 1/4" drive e sockets. I've got 3 sets but all the e 10s are 3/8" drive and they just will not fit in the little space between the thermostat housing and the part above it. So now I'm at a stopping point. I guess I could pull the water pump off but I don't want to pull anything off that I don't have to until get more of the front cleaned from however long this oil has been leaking down the front. I may take the radiator off first thing in the morning. It will give me more room to get brushes in there and clean all the nooks and crannies where the oil has been caking up for years. Who have thought this little drip from the filter housing could cause this much of a mess.

I've got the 2 bolts off the front of the tandem pump. I did have to take the pulley off first. That would have been easier with the belt on but such is life. Now I just have to get to that E10 in the back. I'm hoping these flexible extensions I bought will allow me to get an E10 down there and be able to turn it to get it off. I guess there's one that connects the bracket to the block that might be easier to get to. I'll have to get under there and look. I can see the one that connects the pump to the bracket from above the engine so maybe with the right extensions I can get it off. But for now it's lights off in the garage and Mama's day prep begins.

while I'm waiting for everyone to arrive for the Mother's Day festivities I've been trying to find a radiator for the car. All I'm finding is "discontinued" notices. Anyone have a source for these?

I doubt it will fit. But, I have a 2003or4 SL500 OEM radiator with a hairline crack where a radiator hose connects on a replaceable plastic endcap, where someone forced the tricky hose removal and/or installation.

Hi Aegea,

Thanks for the reply but I don't think it will work. I'm finding that there were lots of changes made to the cars around 2007/8 so I don't think it will fit. I'm going to keep looking.

Joe

I find almost any part on ebay new or used. You can do a google search or enter the part number in the url address bar.

Hi Aegea,

The only ones I'm finding on eBay are Chinese made and I'm not going to chance those in the car. And there's no point in buying a used one since I already have one of those in the car. I'll keep checking around.
