Is the car body made of steel
Does anyone know if the panels are made of steel?
The hood doesn't seem to be steel.
Are the panel materials the same throughout the SL range?

Sorry in advance if this is a dumb question

Hood and doors are aluminium, internal door frames are magnesium, most of the rest is steel, of different grades and strengths according to where it is used.

SL500 and A-CLASS
I did the magnet test and this is what I discovered. The magnet will stick to the car on the rear quarter panel above the rear wheels, on the metal on both sides and top of the windshield, and on the metal on both sides of the rear window.

So I guess I cannot be the lead car in any of our local car rallies because the club magnetic logo will not stick to my doors.

I learned this this hard way this week. I was driving the CL down the freeway about 80 mph when something hit the driver's side door. It was so loud that I needed a diaper. Whatever it was, it was left a 6 inch scratch about 1/8 inch deep in the aluminum panel Cost to fix = $1200.

If the body were made of steel...I dont think the car would have a very much chance of moving really..
