Seat Position Using/Not Using Key

I thought this was strange. I usually use the keyless go option, but the other day I put the key in the ignition and started the car, my seat moved to another position, I got in the car later and used the keyless go option and after starting the car the seat moved back to the previous position.

I thought it was strange that the same key could result in two different seat positions depending on whether it was placed in the ignition or not.

I thought Mercedes remove the key dependant memory in the 2005 SL. This is what Mercedes customer care explained to me. The 2004 SLs have 3 memory banks. One memory space for each key and one for keyless.

In my MBCA STAR magazine, VP for Customer Service, Klaus Ulkann said Mercedes remove the feature allocating individual seat and mirror memories to different keys in the 2005 models.

The situation I was talking about was with one key. I put the key in my pocket and get in the car and start with keyless go, seat stays where I had it. Get in the car again and put the key in the ignition and the seat moves to a different position. Get in the car again with the key in the pocket and use keyless go and the seat goes back to the same postion I started with.

I think there is also something about the two different keys being programmed indepently, there is something in the dash display under one of the menus and "key dependent" I will check it out and let you know.

We think we are talking about the same thing.

When I use the key in the ignition, the seats move to a program position, and when I start with keyless go to seats move to another program position. When my wife uses her key in the ignition the seats move to that program position. On the 2004 models, you can program the memory settings 1, 2, and 3 to each key in the ignition. That means my wife’s key number 1 is different than my number 1 with the key in the ignition. Also keyless go program positions 1, 2, and 3 will be different than the keys 1, 2, and 3 position in the ignition.

I thought the 2005 models just have one memory which memory positions 1, 2, and 3 is shared by keyless go and the key in the ignition. This may mean that the key in the ignition and keyless go can be program to a different 1, 2, and 3.

I will check it out tomorrow with both keys and let you know what I find out.

It's true. The key in the ignition is considered one memory set; a different key in the ignition is another memory set; and all keys used keyless go are another memory set. Apparently keyless go does not have the same key authentication procedure, so it is treated differently.

If you can change the settings of "key dependent memory" in your instrument cluster settings, then you have this capability. If you disable the dependent memory, then all keys will share the same memory settings, keyless go or in the ignition.
