Finally leaving for Germany tomorrow....

Ok, so after 4 agonizingly slow months we finally leave for Germany to pick up our new SL tomorrow. We plan on hitting the MB facility first thing Monday morning to pick up the car. I can not wait! Then we are off for the Black Forest trip, Austria, the Romantic Road and 2 days at the Four Seasons in Prague. We are hoping for the trip of a lifetime!

The only downside is there appears to be rain in the forecast for a good part of the trip. I wonder if the premium leather is water proof? :-)

I will post pictures upon my return if anyone is interested.

Hey, my car completes its production on the 31st of August. I didn't go for the factory collect option, since I am very busy and i have to be travelling at this time but hey, if you see my car, say hello its a black/black sexy beast! I should get it later this September.

Jim:

I will be very interested in hearing your thoughts on your European Delivery experience with the new SL. My wife and I are considering doing the same trip to pick up the same vehicle in May 2013. One concern is the limited luggage space in the new SL for a 12-day trip in Europe. I will be curious to learn from your experience.

We took EDP delivery of ours on July 2nd and very much enjoyed the experience. Highly recommended. Also nice is the 7.7% off MSRP discount you get, without any negotiations necessary.
Remember to buy the highway toll windshield stickers for Switzerland, Austria,
Slovakia, and the Czech Republic, if your travels take you through any of these countries. The fines are steep if you're caught driving without them.
Also for Austria, you technically need to have an International Driver's License. You can pick one up at your local AAA office.
Have a great trip.

Yikes, knew about the need for the sticker in Austria but not the need for one in Prague! Thanks for the heads up!

Arrived yesterday.... What a great place! Our hotel let us check in at 9:00am. Thank god! We were exhusted.

The Mercedes factory is right across the street! You can see the assembly line from the road. It is over 100 feet in the air! Out hotel is on Mercedes St as well. How cool is that! hehe

More after we pick up our car tomorrow!

AVB, have the luggage shipped directly to the hotel consigere's and as you travel have the consigere's forward it directly to your next stay etc, etc. until your ready for your trip home. That way you travel hassel free, your stuff is at the hotel when you arrive each time.

ED Luggage Issue

Sounds like a good idea. What shipping service do you use from the USA to Germany and then once in Germany?

My wife and I picked up our 2009 SL550 at the factory in August 2008. Almost 3 weeks all over eastern Europe, 2100 miles. Before leaving we went to the dealer with luggage and figured out how to configure bags in trunk and behind seats. Then took a picture on the phone so we'd remember hwo to do it! We had plenty of room for luggage, camera, laptop with top up. I don't find going 100 MPH on the autobahn with the top down very pleasant. You can do it, just need some planning. This is a great experience and I hope you do it!

European Delivery is the only way to purchase a car. We did European Delivery in September to pick up my wife's new 640i GC and we had a blast. I posted a trip report here.

I would love to go back and pick up an SL65 to replace my SL500.

OP, please post pictures!
