Window Trim falling off
Anyone have an issue with some trim around window falling off (happening after roof opening and closing)?

couple of months, my friend has one for same period and has the same issue, you might not even notice it but the trim on the back window seems to come off easily

I had a problem with trim around the rear window falling off. Dealer was able to fix it with no noticable after effects. As I recall, it was a simple compression fit with no glue involved.

Both sides of mine fell off on the first day of ownership. I have an appointment tomorrow to fix them. Very weird indeed.

Mine fell off the day before ownership and I was concerned enough to have the Service Manager show me an old part and how he planned to repair it on my car. As a boat owner I am very familiar with the problems of plastic repair using glue (which I had erroneously thought would be part of the fix) --if not done very carefully it glue can create a real mess. But fortunately glue is not involved in this fix!! It's also good that you're jumping on this since as I watched my top go down it was my perception that the plastic piece might interfere with the functioning of the top and possibly damage the plastic piece, body or top metal. My fix was perfect and have not had any problems in this area since.

A number of people responding to this thread have experienced the same problem. What is the cause of the problem? Is it the plastic piece(s) comming loose after going over bumps? Is the cause associated with the process of raising and lowering of the top--perhaps top misallignment? Any experience or opinion?

Although I have had no problems with mine, and I've had it for nine months, I do have the top up and down quite a bit. I live in Southern California and it would be fair to say that the top is down in a significantly higher proportion of the time than it is up. I have never had any problems at all. The roads are not especially bumpy.

I noticed that the window trim above the passenger window was loose in the back this weekend after washing the car. This morning I noticed that the trim above the rear window on the drivers side is gone. They must have had a batch of problems. We'll see what the dealer says today.
Here is a picture for those who wanted to see what the thread is about.

The front window trim appears to have an adhesive at the back toward the back window that has failed to keep it tight. The adhesive is like a wide rubber band between the two parts. The rear one looks like it may be clipped on. I don't see any adhesive on the part remaining. It goes to the dealer this week with 1,100 miles on it.

Centexhokie provided two good photos of potential trim issues. I recently had two trim pieces fall off. In Centexhokie's second photo, the black piece next to the rear window fell off for a second time and the trim piece over the side window fell off as i was bringing the car to the dealer to have the rear window piece reinstalled. Since i asked the question as to "what is causing these problems"--here's what I've lerned from the dealer. First no one knows why they are falling off. The trim piece next to the rear window has existed on other MB models (r230, etc) and there had been problems with it falling off older models. There are many tabs on both the plastic piece and the car that interlock. If those interlocking tabs break (at install, or for someother reason) the piece comes loose. The piece over the rear side window is held in with double sided adhesive tape. Again, no one seems to know why they come loose. A special tool the dealer must procure from MB is required for the piece to be reinstalled correctly. In addition the old tape must be pealed off and where it was adhered thoroughly cleaned with alcohol to remove adhesive residue. When the new one is installed one must avoid washing the car for two days to promote adhesion.

Argh, the trim on my driver's rear side window is having the same problem on my 1-year-old SL550. It apparently comes slightly unglued when I now lower and then raise my roof. I'm pushing the few inches of trim that stick out back down for now, relying upon the weakened adhesive.
I hate having to make service appointments for this kind of stuff. Maybe if I can also find out the TSB # for the squeaky breaks issue too... :-)

I ran into the same issue on my SL550. I had to get the plastic piece replaced.

Dealer had the trim part in stock and said it was a common issue - Took care of the noisy brakes at the same time, they just replaced my front pads and rotors and no issues since. Loaner was a C250
