Bring the vehicle to a Mercedes Dealer and get it inspected,if the seller takes issue with this walk away. As far as legal protection what do you mean ? The dealer will tell you the service / repair history and warranty status, otherwise it's buyer beware when you purchase a used vehicle with no additional warranty expressed or implied regardless of which state the transaction is done in.

Hi Sifis
Apart from checking the condition of the car be sure to check that the person selling to you is the person entitled to sell it to you, in other words that he is the owner. You also need to check that the person selling to you doesn't have an outstanding loan on it. Your Bank should be able to check this for you. My advice, as a lawyer, is get the šeal done through the services of a lawyer so that if a problem does arise you will be able to prove that you bought the cr on the open market and had gone to the trouble of getting a lawyer to have matters checked out and under these circumstances you should then acquire a good title to the car.
