I took delivery of the car yesterday and what can I say ? This SL is perfect, it offers everything I was looking for : a sense of sportiness combined with a refined style, a remarkable smooth ride (the ABC suspension is a great asset), plenty of power (I like the smoothness of the V8, even the sound is perfectly tuned to my taste), the impeccable finish of the interior and the overall build quality. I has to be said again : you have to see the SL in the flesh since pics never do it justice. I got this comment quite a few times yesterday. In real life it looks way more impressive then in a picture.

A question for you guys : has anyone tried a HD with 500gb capacity to play music in the car ? I formatted it to FAT but the car does not recognize it. Will try with a smaller USB drive today to see if it makes a difference.

Some pics are added of the car

Just a great looking color combo.

The only thing I would do is a real light smoke on taillights.

On previous cars, a 2012 C-Class and a 2014 GLK, I tried the same thing; back then, the COMAND system only supported single 32GB partitions. So, I partitioned my 500GB drive into multiple partitions -- the car would only recognize the first one. I haven't tried it on my 2015 SL400 yet, but based on how slowly M-B updates their systems (including, unfortunately, the navigation software), I doubt that anything has changed. They always seem to be one or two generations behind the market!

Indeed, time for a small review. The car has 2000kms at this moment and overall I am very satisfied. My other daily car (which is just sold), was a BMW 740d (F01), so I compare usually with that one in terms of usability, looks and so on.

1. Looks. The SL looks stunning, I am still very happy I choose this particular color combination. I had it coated which makes the paint stand out a lot (and as a plus, its very easy to clean). Initially I had plans to mount other wheels and tires, maybe a slight drop, but to me, its perfect as it is today.

2. Engine. The V8 engine is exactly what I hoped it would be. Put in ECO mode, the car handles as the smooth luxurious cruiser, with a soft, humble exhaust note. Yet enough power/torque is available at all times to get it pulled away if necessary. Switching to Sport mode, a beast is released. The exhaust note becomes much more pronounced, the accelaration phenomenal. From roughly 1500 rpm, the car keeps pulling like a rocket until 6000 rpm. With the top down, the sound is amazing. Also here, no modification are needed for me (although I understand that for some owners, another exhaust is the way to go, but to each his own of course). I wonder how you guys feel with an SL63 AMG

3. Suspension. I opted for the ABC suspension and did not regret it for a second. Our roads are not in the best condition (that's an understatement) so I value the soft (and variable) suspension a lot. I used to test drive a classic suspension car and it was a bit harsher, albeit not much. But the ABC just gives me this little extra I was looking for. Just when taking rapid and fast turns, it seems to become a bit 'wobbly', or in other words : like you don't know whether its going to hold the car stable or not. My BMW used to be more predictable in this sense. Not a complaint however, I am not driver that demands this driving characteristics, comfort wise the car is more than adequate.

4. Interior. The overall quality of the interior is top notch. The leather is soft and yet seems very durable. One minor complaint I have is the seating position : I tend to sit to high in the car. I am 188cm (6ft 2in) and would have loved to sit an inch or so lower. My BMW was the better car in this perspective (I had comfort seats in the 740). Also the upper back support was better in the BMW. Its a minor complaint, and I do not think I will become a problem later. Just a nice to have. Also, the interior is totally noise and crack-free. Even for a convertible, this is truly outstanding.

5. Engine consumption : no idea, I fill her up when she is thirsty

In summary, a very happy camper !

I love the upper back adjustment on our 750 but the SL is actually quite well designed for upper back support compared the old SL. Also, you may want to make sure that dynamic seats are turned on (they are off by default). Helps greatly in curves.

Enjoy!
