Just heard from a very reliable source that there will be a maximum of 700 MY '17 R231 vehicles available for the US.

This info comes from a very reliable source (very large NE dealership).

Anyone heard anything similar?

I am curious as well. The number sounds low since a quick check on cars.com shows 400, but less than half (maybe 160) have pics attached. This leads me to believe that the rest are only allocations to be delivered.

Either way, based on last years sales I would have assumed 2500-3000 units for the year, but our dealer only has 3 SL's located for 2016 (1 SL550, 2 SL450). Nothing with other dealers.

I think ours is the only one in the state with nothing in showrooms...

Clearly not true unless they're planning on introducing the 2018 model year early next year. 700 is about 2 months of sales so for the whole year or model year doesn't make sense.

Only MBs - the best or nothing
With the investments made into retooling (practically a new body with added hardware), a 700 run makes zero financial sense.

Just to compare, Belgium (the post-stamp size country in which I pay my taxes) can only count on 12 units per year ....

700 clearly don't make sense that why I posed the question. That said, the days of 12000 units a year are long over.

I expect the face-lifted model (or any SL for that matter) to pull no more than 5000 units a year in the US.

This is no fault of Mercedes or the SL. Convertibles are a shrinking category as more people gravitate toward SUV's. Which I find ridiculous.
